Bug-time (a dupia cockroach, a sun beetle and a waxworm) !!

After a lot of setbacks, I finally came to the conclusion that if I indeed want Hugo to have cockroaches or anything alike anytime soon, instead of trying to locate that missing petstore, we're just gonna have to order them in which is exactly what I did a few minutes ago!

I suddenly remembered that webstore I mentioned, TIIA'S-PETS. I thought the prices are okay and more importantly, I don't wanna order from a site I don't trust!! Since I've heard only good things when it comes to this place, I simply went and did it even though the thought disgusts me (makes me skin crawl, honestly) beyond belief...

I ordered a box of Dubia cockroaches (Blaptica dubia) which are also known as "orange spotted roaches" or "Guyana spotted cockroaches" which I've noticed have become quite popular hog food ("high quality herp food source that is easier to raise than crickets, meaty roach with a soft body which contain a much higher ratio of protein to indigestible chitin compared to crickets")

Apparently, at least according to Wikipedia, they breed in drier conditions than many other roaches and produce little odor. They are calm and easy to handle for feeding. They do not make any noise which is another reason they are becoming much more popular than crickets. Instead of having an escaped cricket forcing you to go "camping" at home, if you drop a roach they are easy to catch. Compared to other roaches, they are exceptionally poor climbers and cannot climb glass or plastic; they can, however, climb silicone used to seal fish tanks. Compared to crickets, dubia roaches are quiet, don't smell, don't jump out of the enclosure, are less picky eaters, are more hardy." -- I freakin' hope so because the thought of LIVE cockroaches going around the flat is just killing me!

I also ordered a box of Sun Beetle larvae (Pachnoda marginata) and I'm thinking the beetles look quite beautiful (the sun beetles come in nine subspecies, actually - this one is Pachnoda marginata peregrina) though of course what we'll be getting won't be anything as pretty as this -- they'll be ugly white/greyish larvae of which I'll be seeing nightmares for months to come. Yay /sarcasm. Anyway, I've tried surfing the net, but so far I haven't been able to find out any info on their possible nutrional values, but I suspect they'll be high in fat (correct me if I'm wrong)  like superworms' larvae --- which, to think of it, won't probably be a bad thing now that we're trying to get Hugo's weight go up, once again.

Oh and the final box will contain Greater Wax Moth caterpillars (Galleria mellonella) aka waxworms, which will naturally be a bit higher in fat, but also a way for us to ensure Hugo's on a diet versatile enough to maintain his health. He has eaten these before, but they were canned and I thought live maggots (eeew) might be yummier.

So, I'm hoping the order will be in later this week (though there's no way in Hell I'll be picking it up. That's gonna be H. I'm just NOT ready to think of touching those things, ahem). I'll probably end up coming back with some horror-pictures when the day comes...
