[Fic] False Sense of Security (1/2)

Jul 20, 2010 17:59

Footsteps mimicked her own as she ran as fast as she could down the dark alley, illuminated solely by the moonlight and the stars which were completely oblivious to her growing desperation. He was there-she could tell- tailing right behind her, following her every move. She knew he was close... probably closer that what she thinks, waiting for the right moment to strike.

The thought that she was all alone and that nobody would hear her scream, scared her more than she already was. And even though her lungs were burning, her heart beating wildly against her chest she could even hear it in her ears, despite exhaustion creeping slowly on her worn-out body, she willed her feet to move faster.

She turned to a corner, and to another corner, and to another, almost afraid to look back and hoping to lose him from her tail. But he was still behind her ever so steady, hidden from her eyes yet his presence as evident as ever. Growing more and more desperate, she let out a scream.

"Get away from me! Please, just leave me alone!"

The footsteps seemed to stop as she turned around another corner. Only the pitter patter of her bare feet echoed through the walls of the seemingly endless maze of alleys she was in.

Her sprinting slowed down to running and running turned to jogging. She couldn't hear anything else but the sound of her heavy breathing, her heart pounding, and contact of her bare heels against the hard pavement. She wanted to think she was safe, away from that maniac, away from danger, but she couldn't. She stayed wary of her surroundings, her senses highly alert and sensitive, determined to dash again if she hears something.

Only the eerie silence of the night accompanied her as she jogged as silently as she could, constantly looking back and forth, left and right, straining her ears and making less noise as possible. She felt like a deer in the wilderness.

A deer being stalked on by a hungry wolf.

Then, she halted to a dead end. A wall stood in front of her, blocking her escape. She stopped dead cold under the post light perched on top of the wall, not knowing what to do.

She was about to turn back where she came from, but a sing-sung voice came out from nowhere and rooted her to the spot.

"Eliza..."

The voice she used to rudely scoff to and ignore now only sent violent tremors down her spine. She could hear her heart beat louder and faster she thinks he could have heard it.

He was near. Very near. She could practically hear him breathing.

She snapped her head up and around - eyes wide open - looking for the source of the voice she feared the most. But with only a scrawny post light illuminating the darkness, she found no one.

She spotted a garbage dumpster at the far right corner of the dead-end wall. Without any second thoughts, she opened the lid and jumped in. It took her the utmost control of her arms to close the lid shut without making noise. After making sure it was shut, she began burying herself in the garbage bags. She ignored the horrid smell of rotting things beside her, and the rats nibbling at her bloodied and bruised toes.

"Eliza, love, where are you? You want to play hide and seek? When I find you, darling, I'll never let you run away from me again..."

The quiet soft voice muffled by the garbage bags did not calm her, but instead magnified the bone-chilling fear she had ten times more.

She started to cry. She knew he was going to find her. She knew it was all hopeless. She desperately covered her mouth with her dirty hands to keep herself quiet, afraid to make any sound that would just make her impending doom come to her faster.

"I wonder if you're in that dumpster over there..."

The world seemed to have stopped spinning. Everything- even time- seemed to stop. She realized... he knew. He had it planned. It was what he wanted to happen. He had her trapped. All this time he had her follow all his plans...

Like a puppet.

Tak. Tak. Tak.

The slow, deliberate footsteps coming towards the dumpster she was in made her heart jump. There was no escape. This was the end. It is all over.

'No! No, no, no! NO! Not again! Not again... please!' she screamed in her mind.

The lid of the dumpster slowly lifted. The wider the opening got, the wilder her heart jumped and her insides churned. Only one thought resided her fear-immersed mind. She was going to die. She knew it.

'Yunho, somebody, save me!' she silently begged with all the desperation she could muster.

The lid creaked as he opened it, and Eliza snapped her eyes shut and waited for the strike. But before the lid could open and reveal her completely, sirens and screeching tires of cars were heard.

Doors opening and closing, boots jumping out from cars and guns clicking, ready to shoot... Eliza held her breath. An authoritative voice yelled from the background, "This is the police! Put your weapon down and your hands up! We've got you surrounded!"

Eliza’s eyes snapped open. She recognized that voice, no matter how muffled or how different the tone.

Her savior, her lover... Hearing her fiancé’s familiar booming voice flooded her with so much relief that it hurt.

She was safe. At last, she was safe...
