Zopfe - The Final Frontier

Dec 22, 2011 12:08

As you may remember, I had decided awhile back to tackle a project to recreate false braids ala the 16th C in Germany. These items, known as ' Zopfe' in Nürnberg, were frequent items in the dress indices of the period of study covered by Jutta Zander-Seidel's research in the " Textiler Hausrat".

I actually started with an attempt at a reconstruction ( Read more... )

I love these! There is no way in hell I could ever get them in my own hair and make them look that cool, but it sure does look fab on you ladies!

The trick? Lots of fake hair in with the false braids. ;) Now that I have cut my hair chin-length there will have to be EVEN MOAR fake hair added.

Thank you for the compliment Jen, I have to give all credit for the final result to claughter713; I literally threw the falls and braids and pins at her and said, "Make it go!" and she did!

I was wondering when you would write up about them. Glad to see you happy with your work. And it is fascinating to see it all come together like this.

Very cool. Now that I've hacked of 8 inches of my own hair for the winter, I might actually need some extra stuffing for my headdresses. Thanks for sharing!

Happy to do so honey! I know a number of SCAdian ladies out here in the West that use hair falls pretty extensively to bulk out their natural locks as well - to beautiful effect!

It looks great! I would be interested to see where else this has been resurrected down the centuries - you know it must have been done again somewhere at some point.

Love the pics, great memories of Coco. I miss you!

As Alyxx mentoned below, there is evidence of stuffed pigs tails (from real pigs) being used to add bulk to braids; I believe the photos Myra had posted of that were from the Balklands (sp) and were from the 1930's? I will do my best to post the images and info on them soon.

And I miss you too honey! Can't wait to see you in 2012! *HUGS*

This are awesome and your hair looked great at the gala!

It was a long time ago, and I can't remember who had it (pinkdiamond?, jillwheezul?, mmcnealy?) someone on LJ posted a very old photo of German ladies using actual pigs' tails to brain into their hair. I can think of few things more disgusting, but it's looked great!

Now who the hell had that pic...

Myra posted those, and I have them on my Photobucket somewhere. Remind me and I will repost them in here once I have access to a real computer. ;)

I have no idea where Myra went...I believe she may have shuffled off into the 18th century at some point. *hum*

Here are the images in question (real pig tails! *grin*):
