"Thanks again." Jacob murmured as he left the fitting room; it was like this every year. He'd grown another three inches or so during the summer, and his robes once again had to be refitted- his mother was sighing quietly as she paid, and it always made Jacob feel a little cumbersome. Socrates hadn't been any help either, since he'd gone to sleep in Jacob's hood and had quite terrified Madame Malkin when she went to adjust it. The grass snake was asleep now, though, curled up deep inside Jacob's front pocket.

As he exited, he saw at least one face he recognised. "Maggie!" He exclaimed, trying to catch her attention before she left the shop. "How've you been? Did you have a nice summer?"

Maggie jumped slightly when she heard her name being called. She turned around slowly, a little scared to see who she might find. Her eyes lit up and a smile crossed her face as she saw Jacob. "Jacob!" She practically danced her way over to him. She stopped in front of her friend and threw her arms around his neck, she had to stand on her tiptoes and reach way up but she managed, oh the joys of having an outrageously tall friend. She leaned back after the hug and wrinkled her nose.

"Summer. The United States just isn't Hogwarts.. All of the muggles." She sighed and shrugged. "I came to miss my wizarding friends, seeing as how my parents absolutley refuse to let me get an owl." That was still a sore spot with Maggie. "But enough about me, how was your summer?"

She switched the weight from her right leg to her left and smiled, again.

OOC: If Jacob's being too overfamiliar, say and I'll edit. I like that they're friends! badger_dreyfuss September 4 2007, 14:14:42 UTC
Jacob grinned; Maggie was always fun to talk to, and he'd missed her company over the holidays. "No owl? Well, that explains why no letters. My summer's been... interesting, I guess. Looking at options for the future, helping dad out with the MIL, looking after Ruth. She's really getting big, you know."

Jacob's smile spread even further across his face. "Oh! I have a couple of bits of good news- I got made prefect, and I'm the quidditch captain this year! It should be quite good fun, I think." Jacob reached across and tousled the girl's hair. "Plus, I refuse to admit I keep growing, so you must have shrunk about three inches since I saw you last. I'll have to use some of my prefectural influence to double your rations."

Jacob's mother had finished paying for his robes now, and was tactfully hanging back while the two students chatted. Maggie was a good friend of Jacob's, and she knew they hadn't really communicated over the holidays.

It's fine.. Maggie needs a friend... The plot, like gravy, thickens. maggie_mcdonald September 4 2007, 21:10:00 UTC
"Yeah. They think it makes the house stink." Maggie rolled her emerald eyes once more. "'Never did understand all the sqauwking. Why can't you just use the regular mail'" Maggie's imitation of her mom was almost dead on. "I try to explain to her but muggles.. ugh."

"That's brilliant! I'm so proud of you." Maggie had learned to switch from her American slang to her British slang, by now. When Jacob tousled her hair and commented on her height, she wrinkled her nose. "Are you calling me short?" Height, oh, something she was sensitive about. "That's it, you big dolt." She let a wicked grin play across her lips and then attempted to punch him. A vibration ran up her arm, it felt as if she had hit a brick wall. "Ow! Jacob, why did you do that." She laughed and wrinkled her nose, playfully this time.

Maggie sent a smile Jacob's mom's way, then turned her attention back to Jacob. True, she had always had a small crush on him, but luckily he didn't know and they could go on being friends.
