"Thanks again." Jacob murmured as he left the fitting room; it was like this every year. He'd grown another three inches or so during the summer, and his robes once again had to be refitted- his mother was sighing quietly as she paid, and it always made Jacob feel a little cumbersome. Socrates hadn't been any help either, since he'd gone to sleep in Jacob's hood and had quite terrified Madame Malkin when she went to adjust it. The grass snake was asleep now, though, curled up deep inside Jacob's front pocket.
As he exited, he saw at least one face he recognised. "Maggie!" He exclaimed, trying to catch her attention before she left the shop. "How've you been? Did you have a nice summer?"
Maggie jumped slightly when she heard her name being called. She turned around slowly, a little scared to see who she might find. Her eyes lit up and a smile crossed her face as she saw Jacob. "Jacob!" She practically danced her way over to him. She stopped in front of her friend and threw her arms around his neck, she had to stand on her tiptoes and reach way up but she managed, oh the joys of having an outrageously tall friend. She leaned back after the hug and wrinkled her nose.
"Summer. The United States just isn't Hogwarts.. All of the muggles." She sighed and shrugged. "I came to miss my wizarding friends, seeing as how my parents absolutley refuse to let me get an owl." That was still a sore spot with Maggie. "But enough about me, how was your summer?"
She switched the weight from her right leg to her left and smiled, again.
OOC: If Jacob's being too overfamiliar, say and I'll edit. I like that they're friends!badger_dreyfussSeptember 4 2007, 14:14:42 UTC
Jacob grinned; Maggie was always fun to talk to, and he'd missed her company over the holidays. "No owl? Well, that explains why no letters. My summer's been... interesting, I guess. Looking at options for the future, helping dad out with the MIL, looking after Ruth. She's really getting big, you know."
Jacob's smile spread even further across his face. "Oh! I have a couple of bits of good news- I got made prefect, and I'm the quidditch captain this year! It should be quite good fun, I think." Jacob reached across and tousled the girl's hair. "Plus, I refuse to admit I keep growing, so you must have shrunk about three inches since I saw you last. I'll have to use some of my prefectural influence to double your rations."
Jacob's mother had finished paying for his robes now, and was tactfully hanging back while the two students chatted. Maggie was a good friend of Jacob's, and she knew they hadn't really communicated over the holidays.
It's fine.. Maggie needs a friend... The plot, like gravy, thickens.maggie_mcdonaldSeptember 4 2007, 21:10:00 UTC
"Yeah. They think it makes the house stink." Maggie rolled her emerald eyes once more. "'Never did understand all the sqauwking. Why can't you just use the regular mail'" Maggie's imitation of her mom was almost dead on. "I try to explain to her but muggles.. ugh."
"That's brilliant! I'm so proud of you." Maggie had learned to switch from her American slang to her British slang, by now. When Jacob tousled her hair and commented on her height, she wrinkled her nose. "Are you calling me short?" Height, oh, something she was sensitive about. "That's it, you big dolt." She let a wicked grin play across her lips and then attempted to punch him. A vibration ran up her arm, it felt as if she had hit a brick wall. "Ow! Jacob, why did you do that." She laughed and wrinkled her nose, playfully this time.
Maggie sent a smile Jacob's mom's way, then turned her attention back to Jacob. True, she had always had a small crush on him, but luckily he didn't know and they could go on being friends.
Sorry for the delay! I really suck at real life. Oh, and anything in [] brackets is in parseltongue.badger_dreyfussSeptember 13 2007, 15:54:33 UTC
"Why did I do that? Maggie, you should know I'm totally indestructible by now. And I didn't mean you were short, more... well, delicate. You know what I mean. And you should have used the regular mail- it still gets through, y'know. Most of the time, anyhow." Jacob quickly looked back at his mum, and then turned to Maggie with a thoughtful look on his face.
"Look, are you only just starting your shop? I mean, I've got to get most of my stuff yet, and we could go shopping together if you liked." Socrates stirred in Jacob's pocket, twisting about. "I'll get some cash from my ma, and I reckon I can treat us both to an icecream afterwards, if you like. Sound good?"
I pretty much suck at life as well.maggie_mcdonaldSeptember 17 2007, 14:02:57 UTC
"Yes you." She laughed quitley then shook her head. "Duel me with wands, I'll so you delicate" She narrowed her eyes as a smile played across her lips. They had been friends for too long, or not. She enjoyed thier playful banter, even though she knew he would best her any day. "Eh, muggle mail just isn't the same as owls. I get impatient. Start yelling at the mailbox, it isn't pretty." She shrugged her shoulders.
"Yeah. This was my first stop, it was the easiest so I stopped here first." Maggie smiled and nodded. "That would be awesome. You can tell me all about your summer and I can tell you my tips on shrinking." She wrinkled her nose playful, which she tended to to a lot, and nudged him, lightly this time. "Ohh.. ice cream. Sounds perfect. You are bloody brilliant."
"What was that? Did you say something?" Maggie titled her head slightly to the right in confusion. "Oh well, maybe I'm just hearing things. Mum thinks I'm loosing my hearing." she rolled her eyes.
Oh! You'll know Jacob's a Parseltongue by the way. It's pretty common knowledge.badger_dreyfussSeptember 18 2007, 10:15:51 UTC
Jacob grinned as Maggie agreed to go. "Awesome, that's- that's great. I'll just go sort it out with my mum- I'll be back in a minute-"
Jacob hustled over to where his mum was paying. Before he could open his mouth, she started speaking in a low voice. "Here's 10 Galleons, that should cover everything you need. Don't spend too much extra showing your young lady a good time, and give me the change later. Just use the public fireplace to get home and don't forget to pick up your potion ingredients- I don't want a repeat of last year, okay?"
Last year, Jacob had managed to score the first points change for Hufflepuff- and in a downwards direction- by forgetting to restock his potion ingredients for his first class. What had made it even worse was that it was his head of house who'd had to do it, and he really liked potions.
"No worries mum, I'll- wait, what?"
"Your potion ingredients, Jacob. Now you-"
"No, I mean about Maggie; she's not a young lady - well, she is a young lacy, just not my young lady, and I w

"Um.. o-" Before Maggie had time to finish, Jacob was off. She managed to look busy by sorting thorugh robes she knew she wouldn't buy. When a friendly witch came to try and help her she just shook her head and explained that she didn't need any.
Maggie watched Jacob's mom steamroll him with information. She smiled to herself as she watched Jacob blubber and stumble over something before regaining his composure. She saw, out of the corner of her eye, Jacob's mom kiss him on the cheek before he bounded back over to Jacob's side. "'Bye Mrs. Dreyfuss.
"Awesome, I could use some company. Oh, how is Socrates? I won't make you get him out becuase he is probably sleeping" and Maggie was still slightly afraid of him. "I need to fill up my potions too. Ah, last year we lost." she threw him a playful glare. "Yes, you must go get potion suplies."
As he exited, he saw at least one face he recognised. "Maggie!" He exclaimed, trying to catch her attention before she left the shop. "How've you been? Did you have a nice summer?"

[You taste nervous.] hissed Socrates. [It's bothering me. Stop it.]
[Shut up, Socrates.] Jacob mumbled in parseltongue, covering his mouth and pretending to cough.
