It's time for Chapter Two of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Dobby's Warning.

Thoughts should be kept to a low whisper so that Uncle Vernon can tell his Japanese golfer joke, but clearly there is much to be discussed.

1) Dobby the House-Elf. Dobby can be incredibly annoying at times, though probably less so to me than to Harry, but he can also be dead useful, and even amusing, so I'll forgive him his appalling speech patterns.

2) What has Dobby heard about Harry? Clearly quite a lot, and if it's from the Malfoys, it can't be very complimentary. That Dobby is so honoured to meet Harry speaks volumes about his low regard for his masters' opinions.

3) "Just Dobby, sir." House-elves have no family names.

4) What a polite boy! Even though Dobby's appearance has startled Harry, and his presence in Privet Drive is inconvenient, Harry is unfailingly polite. I still wonder where he learned such good manners, but it's nice that he is so conscious of not wanting to seem rude.

5) "Bound to serve one house and one family forever." I have often wondered how long house-elves live and how old Dobby might be. For how many generations has he served the Malfoys? And yet here he breaks with the sacred law of elfdom and betrays his "family" for the sake of ( ... )

11) "Dobby has known it for months, sir." So, was Dobby's master waiting for that important 50 year mark to unleash the power of the diary? Does Lucius feel as bound by numbers and symbols as Voldemort seems to be?

12) "Harry Potter must not put himself in peril. He is too important, sir!" Does Dobby only mean the things Harry has already done, or has he heard about a certain prophesy? It would make more sense for Dobby to risk visiting Harry like this if he believes Harry is destined to do more than he has already done, rather than just because he thinks Harry has done good work in the past.

13) "He hasn't got a brother, has he?" *giggle* No! He has a sister! An eeeeeeeevil sister! At least, my theory is correct. I've been wrong before. Seriously, though. Dobby widens his eyes to give Harry the hint that the danger is Tom Riddle, not Voldemort, and his eyes are "wider than ever" at Harry's joking question about Voldemort having a brother. Could Dobby be trying to suggest something else?

14) "Albus Dumbledore is the ( ... )

21 - I was happy that he shared his food with Hedwig too. And Hedwig even seems to understand what Harry says to her. She is a very smart owl!

I have often wondered if wizarding owls are different from regular owls? Are How do they deliver the post correctly every time? Are they trained? Charmed? Some other kind of creature entirely?
