I like this. It makes me feel so sorry for Merope. It must have been such a boon to her confidence to have Tom fall in love with her, but knowing it wasn't real must have hurt so much more. Poor woman.

Wow, I'm really happy you noticed that about Merope, because that was exactly what I first wanted to convey with this drabble. Unfortunately, most of the parts that hinted at Merope's lack of confidence and her inability to face reality went to the cutting floor to keep this at one hundred words. Stupid longwinded "eating soup" description :(.

Glad you liked it. Yeah, Merope, I'm sorry to say, is a pretty pathetic character--although I can understand where she's coming from.
