1. What is the Harry Potter Art Exchange?
The Harry Potter Art Exchange (or HPAE) is an open, art-only exchange community. You give art, you get art. The HPAE is not ship-specific or character-centric but rather welcomes anything and everything related to Harry Potter. Wanna see art of the Giant Squid? Include it as a prompt when you sign up and it may get drawn.
Fanartists of all skill levels and fandom experience are welcome to converge, interact, and share their talents with one another. Newbie, oldbie, second-timer coming off hiatus - all are welcome at the HPAE.
2. How does it work?
The mechanics of the exchange are simple: sign up, get assigned a partner, create art for your partner, post art, enjoy art!
At the beginning of each session, interested artists are asked to complete a sign-up form providing their likes, dislikes, prompts, etc. Each participant will be randonly assigned a partner when the sign-up period has concluded. A list of the assigned partnerships (or pairist list) will be posted to the community with links to each participant's sign-up form. Once the pairings list has been posted, artists can begin drawing for their partner. Artists can then post their finished work to the community when it is completed.
Each session will have a theme and artists have the option of incorporating the theme into their artwork. Adhering to the theme is not mandatory; it's there as an extra prompt for inspiration. Themes are taken from suggestions by participants.
3. How often does it run?
The HPAE runs three times a year. Each session is roughly four months long with the first month acting as the sign-up period. Session 1 runs from January to April, Session 2 runs from May to August, and Session 3 runs from September to December. For a complete breakdown of the dates, refer to
Session Dates.
4. Who runs the HPAE and how can I contact them?
The Harry Potter Art Exchange is primarily run by
__hibiscus with
karasu_hime as co-mod. Questions, comments, and/or concerns related to community, the art posted therein, or its members should be directed to hpae @ hibi-esque.com. Questions may also be left in the comments of the
FAQ entry.
5. Who can participate?
Everyone! Anyone! Fanartists of all skill level and fandom experience are more than welcome to take part in the exchange. The HPAE is not character-centric or ship-specific and does not limit (see FAQ #6 for the exception) the kinds of art that can be posted to the community or even requested by participants.
6. What kinds of art are accepted?
The HPAE asks that only the following be submitted: drawn traditional (pencil, watercolour, etc.) and digital (Photoshop, Poser, Gimp or similar) art; sculpture, hand-made pieces. Slash and femmeslash artwork as well as artwork of all ratings are also acceptable submissions for the HP Art Exchange.
The following will NOT be accepted at the HPAE: graphics, manips, layouts, icons.
7. Is there a minimum age requirement for participation?
Yes. Some of the content in the community may be adult in nature, and as such, artists must be 16 years or older in order to participate.
8. What happens if I can't complete my art in time?
You have two options available if you cannot complete your art in time. You may drop out of the exchange or you may request for an extension. Either way, you must email the mods at hpae @ hibi-esque.com to inform them. Unless requested otherwise, the standard extension period granted will be 7 days from the session deadline.
9. What happens if my partner drops out?
At HPAE, we will try our very best to provide giftart for all participants. In the event that your partner drops out, we will call on one of our
pinch-hitters to complete your request. A pinch-hitter will be given an extra two weeks past the session deadline in order to complete the art for you. You may receive your giftart a little later, but you will get one.
10. I'm finished, when can I post my art?
You can post your art whenever you have finished it. There is no posting schedule. All we ask is that you finish before the deadline and that you follow the
posting guideline.
11. If I sign up for one session, does that mean I have to sign up for the other sessions?
No. Each session is a separate event. If you sign up for one session, you are not obligated to continue on with future sessions. However, we hope that you like the HPAE enough to sign up again!
