From what I've seen, kittens tend to be messy with litter boxes. They don't quite get the concept of being neat. I have a hooded litter box specifically to keep my fosters from throwing it out. Oh, and they like to leap out of the box and spray litter 3 feet away from the opening. That's physics for ya.

They're growing fast, aren't they? And well.. even our adult cats don't care where the litter goes, we have a hooded box but they didn't grasp the thing with a door <.<.. thus no door.

Poppy still spreads cat litter everywhere, it is a natural thing from burying it. Get a large tray and put a smaller one inside. That should contain most of it, and put it on a rubber mat so you can just hose it down.
