I agree with you fully, but what I wonder is whether accepting civil unions would be a useful first step. There are plenty of straight people who don't care a whit for being married, but would like the benefits, and might prefer the term "civil union".

On the other hand, maybe any compromise is not good enough. That's not for me, a straight married woman, to say. That is for my gay friends to decide, and I will support their decision.
