Separate but (not) equal

I have been having this fight since the election with straight people (and some gay people) who think that "civil unions" will solve the problem of the inequality of the state not recognizing gay marriages.  New Jersey tried this compromise and it didn't work. I agree with you fully, but what I wonder is whether accepting civil unions would be a useful first step. There are plenty of straight people who don't care a whit for being married, but would like the benefits, and might prefer the term "civil union".

On the other hand, maybe any compromise is not good enough. That's not for me, a straight married woman, to say. That is for my gay friends to decide, and I will support their decision.

I have to wonder if these people have completely forgotten their Civics courses in High School-- Topeka, Kansas anyone? Separate can never be equal.
