Seriously, this was going to be a larger quilt. You are looking at 2 blocks there and it will be 4 blocks total. I was planning on it being 3 by 4 blocks, 3 times larger than this. I don't know what I was thinking. Here's the math on the individual squares (there are extra squares on half the borders to complete the repeating pattern, as in giving the diamond it's point):

For the baby blanket: 1088 1" squares

For a larger version: 3184 1" squares

Thanks, I really like the challenge and seeing the outcome of all the little pieces together. I also like knitting socks and other things on small needles and fine weight yarn, I like the feel of it and have grown more accustom to it than worsted weight yarn on size 7's which now feels bulky. I don't think it's harder doing it in miniature, I just bought a sewing machine this year and haven't gotten the hang of it yet. I've been sewing by hand since I was 9 years old and it just feels better to me than the machine. This sort of piecework isn't good for machine sewing anyway. I have more control over 1/16's of inches by hand. Plus, over time I've gotten more stitches per inch in hand quilting and while it takes longer, it's much more satisfying to me to make it as intricate as I can. I'm one of those people that tends to like the process over the completed object better. I do like seeing my work completed, but I don't mind that it will take a long time.
