Nolan Home for Wayward Refugees, 33 Apocalypse, Saturday Morning

Mar 31, 2012 10:14

Ronan knew full well what day it was. In fact, he'd made sure to get up early and start cooking, just in case. Hey, if he didn't have any kids show up, he could always share the food with kids of people who had.

Anyone walking by 33 Apocalypse on Saturday morning, though, would see a new sign affixed near the front door:

"No, you knock."

"Why should I knock? You knock."

"Because I was here first!"

"Nuh-uh. I was totally here before you were. You've never been to Fandom before, remember? And I have!"

"I mean I got to here first this time. And anyway, your face is stupid."

"Tell that to Dad, he gave it to me."

Ronan? Someone was outside. Well, two someones.

"Oh, hey, I think he's cooking!"

"Duh, have you met our Dad?"

Ronan laughed and pulled the door open. "Hey, guys. C'mon in, the first batch is just finishing."

Give him a moment and he'll even remember which two you are.

"Peach, right? And Caled?"

"Yeah, but which one's which?" Peach asked.

Caled rolled his eyes and pushed around his ersatz brother. "I'm Caled, he's Peach, we're hungry. Our portal had a layover in IKEA. IKEA. And neither of us had local currency for meatballs."

Sighing, Peach followed Caled inside. "Yeah, and whose fault is that? You're the one who spent it in video game world."

"Yeah, but I-"

"On Tetris."

"Tetris is awesome!"

"I think I can manage to feed both of you," Ronan assured them, laughing a bit. "C'mon, sit down, and I'll dish you out some plates."

Whoever decided to throw these two together? Genius or madness. Ronan wasn't sure which.

"And I'll see about meatballs for supper."

Right. So when Felix came through the portal, he realized a)it was daylight and b)he wasn't actually certain where Jack and Sebastien lived in this dimension, let alone how to reach them. But, as the ward of two vampires, he was used to being resourceful. He smelled breakfast, spotted a name on the sign that had come up a time or two in Jack's stories about school, and impulsively wandered up to the door.

"I don't mean to bother you," he called in, a French accent dancing about his voice. "this may be an odd question, but do you know a Jack Priest?"

He eyed the food hungrily. Teenage boys...

Yeah, Ronan knew that look.

"We're acquainted," he explained, grinning. "Went to school together, still visit sometimes. You're one of his, then?"

He waved Felix in. "C'mon, you hungry?"

"Very," Felix confirmed easily, stepping through the door. "And I suppose I'm his. He's mentioned your name -- not that he likes talking about school these days. I'm Felix."

"Ronan Nolan," he confirmed, waving Felix over to the table. "Come on in, help yourself. Anything else I can get you?"

There were going to have to be some phonecalls later, yes.

Even though she couldn't sense her parents on the island, Victoria wasn't worrying. Even at eight she'd heard enough stories to know it was Fandom. Weirdness happened but things always worked out in the end.

The sign caught Victoria's attention and she grinned. Mom and Dad might not be around but she was pretty sure that sign meant another familiar face was.

Without hesitation she orbed herself into the house. Specifically, the kitchen.

A shimmer of sparkly lights announced her arrival, followed quicky by a loud "Uncle Ronan!!! I'm here!!"

"What's for breakfast?"

[And now I go poof till about 1:30 or so.]

"Pretty much anything you want," Ronan assured her, grinning. "... Victoria."

He was at least 50% guessing, but, hey, whatever worked, right?

"Waffles with maple syrup and tabasco?" she asked hopefully.

She darted across the room to give one her favorite uncles a quick hug.

"Where are my mom and dad?"

"Not on the island, unfortunately," Ronan admitted, hugging back with one arm while reaching into a conveniently nearby cupboard with the other to grab his tabasco.

"But I'll call them in a minute. I'm sure they'll orb over to see you just as soon as they hear you're here." He considered for a moment. "Or, if they can't, it'll be because they're doing something really important to keep you and everyone else safe, right?"

Betty Ross Junior was not the nicest of teenagers at the best of times. When she was agitated and liable to smash down a wall at the drop of a hat, she was much more of a handfull. In this particular instance, however, she was accompanied by her younger half-sister, who was far more patient and, as much as Betty hated to say it, far more clever.

"Look, see, we found it," Betty said with a huff. She was red in the face, but she was red pretty much everywhere. "We found stupid Dr. Flame's house, just like we're supposed to. Go say hi to your stupid dad, and now I'm going to go find mine, okay?"

While they were only on the porch, Betty's voice had a tendency to carry...

Pandora couldn't help but roll her eyes. She simpy elbowed her sister in the arm and shook her head. Not many would dare to do so, but Pandora knew her sister better than anyone.

"Look, we had plans for this sort of thing for a reason," she said. "Daddy and dad knew exactly how likely this was. Just because my dad is easier to find doesn't mean our mutual father isn't here. You are such a daddy's girl it is ridic--"

"Shut up!" Betty cut off her sister. "I am not, and you know it. Look, just because your dad is..." She pointed to the sign. "Look, just because he's all super up on things doesn't mean he's better than--"

"Oh, here we go again," Pandora said with a sigh. "I don't know why you insist on having this stupid argument all the time."

"Don't call me stupid!" Betty shouted.

"I didn't," Pandora pointed out, looking half-amused and only a little annoyed. "You know I didn't. I called your argument stupid, which it is. Nothing about you."

... Yeah, that was definitely one of his. Although Ronan was more than a little confused at the 'Doctor Flame' -- he couldn't think of any particular future that would involve him returning to anything like the superhero codename he'd used with Jenny, way back when.

"So which one of you is mine?" he asked, smiling softly, as he opened the door. "Although you're both more than welcome to come in and have some breakfast."

[Agh, I totally fell asleep for, like, two hours. Maybe three. Something.]

"Please, you wish I was your kid," Betty said, crossing her arms over her chest and looking away like she didn't care. She had an attitude problem, this was true.

"I am," Pandora said, perking up a bit at the sight of her father. "Don't mind Betty, she's just... she's Betty. She warms up to people around after lunch, usually."

"I do not," Betty argued.

"You do too," Pandora said. "I suppose I have to tell you who I am, don't I?"

Katrina had hoped for Disneyland, but Fandom wasn't so bad. She checked the newspapers to see what year it was, then the phonebook, and headed to her dad's place.

She could have used magic, but it would've been frivolous.

"Dai stiho, Dad!" she called from the front porch.

"Dai, love!" he called back. "C'mon in, there's breakfast."

No, he didn't know offhand who it was -- but there were only so many people who'd use that particular greeting.

"Good!" Katrina wandered in and beamed at him before giving him a hug. "Bet you didn't expect to see me again when I didn't show up last year, hmmm?"

She handed him some flowers she'd gotten from the side of the road. "Feeeeeed me. I just got back from Crossings and then the portal diverted me here."

"I've decided not to expect anything when it comes to Fandom," Troy pointed out. "But besides that, someone's actually shown up who wasn't even here that last time. Remember Peach?"

Yeah, Ronan was never going to call him Michael.

"And Caled's here again, too."
