i'm amazed that this chilli doesn't have any beans! If I add beans will they disintegrate?

I'm honestly not sure what would happen if you added beans, though I suspect that they may very possibly disintegrate. I don't put beans in my chili, but I blame that on Texas, where I learned to make it. They're sort of sacrilege. :)

Sloppy joes are a totally different beast. Nothing but ground meat (I rarely-to-never make chili with nothing but ground meat), very tomato-based sauce with little spice, most of the flavouring coming from vegetables (e.g. onions and bell peppers). While (red) chili generally has tomato in some form or another, it's primarily a spice-based dish, not tomato-based.
