Something that rather impressed me

Our neighbors cat, Teddy, ever since he becam an adult, has always come in to our garden to hunt birds. His usual strategy, although I can kind of see his thinking, is to go and sit in wait by the pile of breadcrusts we put out for the birds. However, although this idea would work in theory, for some reason when he does this we don't get any birds ( Read more... )

We have a cat next door that we look after when they go on holiday a lot, his name is Kipper, he a lovely cat but he keeps catching mouses and birds just to kill them, not to eat them?

I don't know why they do that really, he makes a mess everywhere with the birds, feathers everywhere. :/

I guess huntings just in their nature. This cat's incredibly pampered (which is probably why he's so hopeless XD), and only hunts birds for purely for the fun of it. He and the other cats in our neighborhood also catch a lot of mice from the disused parking lot behind our houses, but if they didn't hunt them, then all what would happen would be that the mice would continue to breed and would get in to people's houses, and then people would put out poisen for them. I guess in a way, cats hunting mice is a natural form of pest control. And compared to how long it would take for poisen to kill a mouse, being pounced on by a cat is probably actually a nicer way to go.

Hmm. It's good to hear that cats can actually think of something like that. :) Usually, they just stay and do things without careful plotting.

Yeah. Usually he just choses to sit and stare at a tree or bush as if hoping the birds may jump in to his mouth XD It doesn't work.
