Our neighbors cat, Teddy, ever since he becam an adult, has always come in to our garden to hunt birds. His usual strategy, although I can kind of see his thinking, is to go and sit in wait by the pile of breadcrusts we put out for the birds. However, although this idea would work in theory, for some reason when he does this we don't get any birds in our garden. I don't think that he's quite yet grasped the concept of staying hidden from your prey. However, the other day, we saw him doing something that rather impressed us.
After a morning in his usual position and with no luck, Teddy apparently decided to go for a change in tactic. And so, my mum watched him go over to the pile of breadcrusts, pick one up with his mouth, and retreat back to a shadowy corner of our garden where we keep our old christmas tree. She then saw him put the breadcrust down about half a meter in front of the christmas tree, and then go and crouch down behind it, hidden and in wait for birds.
I personally found this pretty impressive! This is an example of a cat using bait to catch birds! I've never seen anything like that before! I guess that goes to show that cats are pretty intelligent. Does anyone else have any examples of seeing their cats using bait to catch prey?
