Summary: Surprise fill (for me anyway) for the hoodie_time H/C comment-fic meme. Original prompt is here, and long. But it boils down to: Alcoholic!Dean and enabler!Sam-n-Cas, plus reality-check. Short. Gen.
Hah! I just commented on this on the meme about twenty minutes ago, and was going to come and see if it was posted here so I could tell you again how much I liked it. I'm even going to highlight the same part, because it just said so much about Sam and Cas and how much damage they are doing now and have done in the past, in canon.
"It’s probably got the angel’s fingerprints on it. And Dean’s. And Sam’s are all over the bottle in the kitchen." Yup. Dean's alcoholism has Castiel and Sam's enabling fingerprints all over it.
It's sort of bizarre because I would normally think of enablers as, like, doing what Sam does at the end here--picking him up, taking care of him, making it really difficult to hit rock bottom. Not, y'know, actually giving the alcoholic more booze.
On the other hand, in the world of hunters, being a hard drinker is probably so commonplace that functional alcoholism more or less comes with the territory. So maybe it isn't that surprising. I figure both Sam and Dean probably have some screwed up associations with alcohol due to their Dad and they just kind of carried it on into their own lives, never stopping to step back and really look at it. Introspection is not a Winchester strong point.
Thanks for the double comment! You are awesome. ;)
Thanks! And yeah, I love the idea of sewing!boys. It's kind of a thing. I dunno.
In this case it was a good way to illustrate Dean's role in Sam's life (and its relation to his drinking and other coping mechanisms). And it made me squee a little. So win all around!

I particularly loved the image of Dean sewing Sam's jeans.
