I really liked this! Love the concept of there being a whole hunter culture with it's own language, rituals and traditions as seen by an outsiders pov. Throw that in with some possessed/hurt Dean, and brotherly schmoop, and you made me one happy camper! :) Thank-you!

Hilariously, this is probably the nicest version of John, Sam and Dean I've ever written. I tried to keep as close as possible to fandom's general interpretations of them, so they're a lot less...intense than they usually are. Glad you enjoyed it! There can never e too much outsider POV, imho, so I love to add tot he total count. Thanks very much!

I had to wait until wifi returned before it would download to my Kindle, but once it did...I haz reading.

Man, this was damned cool. But then I knew it would be. It rang so true because we have these sorts of cultures in America; we just might not be clued into them. Gyspsies, the hollers of Appalachia, our copious Almish and Menonite population here in Ohio.

I loved your fabricated language, your depiction of John, the mysterious arrival of Dean, Jess' outsider POV, Sam's bad-assery...ALL OF IT. It's smart and curious and comes at things from a such a different angle.

Please, ma'am, may we have another?

This was a real trip to write. Some of it I'd done a couple months ago, so it says something that I quick working on it and then cambe back to it. I guess it was an idea I cared about. I didn't get skull!Bobby in but alas, we can't have everything. Even from our own brains.

Glad it worked for you! I don't know if you mean 'another fic in this universe'--I hadn't really planned one. But I'm content to imagine Jess completing her honors' project, being lauded as a great young researcher, getting some sort of grant for grad school, etc. etc. She probably does date Sam for a bit but it doesn't work out because of ethical reasons and also because he's got a dark side that freaks her out, and rightly so. But she visits him after his dad dies, though she doesn't get to see the funeral, because those rites are too sacred to let anyone who's not a hunter witness them.

;)

I really like the whole idea of the fic. Theoretically, Jess could come back or have further talks with Sam about this in a sequel

Indeed! And she's probably not going to die toasted to death on the ceiling, so win/win for everyone!

Glad you enjoyed it. It was fun to write.

The whole question of the existence of supernatural things was something I'd originally intended to tackle with a 'homg are they really crazy murderers???' kind of approach. And then I realized actually there was precedent for an approach that didn't require either reality to be the absolute truth. They definitely live in a world different from the one on the show, so in that regard there probably aren't demons smoking around jumping down people's throats. But, at the same time, there are lots of cultures in the world that believe things very different from what is generally accepted as 'reality,' and what's really interesting is the impact these worldviews can have on the lives of the people living according to them. So you have traditions where people are say possessed by spirits, and these things to them are very real. And not just in a 'they believe' sort of way. It seems to go well beyond that. But there are things about human minds and experience that still aren't really well understood. So that's what I was going for here, with ( ... )

This was brilliant. I too am fascinated by different languages and cultures and your take on Hunters as a sort of ethnic-based nomadic sub-culture, somewhat like Travellers, with their own language, sacraments and rites of passage was completely captivating. Loved the bits of language you created too.
And the three Winchesters really lend themselves to this scenario, as you said in a previous comment: John as the old-school 'separatist' traditionalist, Sam as the young gun who wants to integrate with the mainstream and Dean caught in the middle! Just perfect. I really enjoyed this story a lot. :)

I'm so glad! This was such a fun fic to write, and it's great I'm not the only one who got a kick out of it. The best part as how well a lot of the stuff on the show worked for this sort of recasting of these guys. I was definitely thinking of real-life nomadic cultures when writing this, so you're right on the money about that one. It's great you enjoyed this, thank you so much for your kind words!
