How I Met Your Mother, Season 1

Remember how I was lamenting the dearth of decent situation comedies? Yeah, well, I have to shut up now because I've fallen in love with HIMYM. I enjoyed the pilot somewhat but was still very cautious. I wondered if the quality would peak and then drop off, but I was delightfully surprise to find that the show just got more and more awesome with ( Read more... )

I started to watch the first season just because everyone kept talking about it, and it’s been a couple of years now. I really didn’t fall in love with the series until the Duel.

I think it’s Marshal and Ted’s relationship that I find most interesting. I like that they have lived together for so long, and are still willing to hang out together too.

I was so sad as Lily and Marshal started to fall apart under the strain of planning the wedding. Damm whomever cancelled at the fancy house and pushed up the wedding date.

Ted and Marshall's relationship really grounds the show. I love that Ted and Lily get along really well too, because often that can be a source of conflict for other people - the fiancee and the best friend (Barney: one of the best friends).

Yeah, pushing up the wedding date really pushed them, Lily especially, over the edge. Also, Marshall has had to sacrifice some of his values to pay for things. You know they'll make it though. They're just made for each other.

That was a pretty great episode. I don't think I was madly in love until "Drumroll, Please."

Thanks! I'm trying to keep up with omoo. I've got 5 episodes to watch today.

I love that this show is grounded in realism when it comes to showing just how difficult it can be to connect with another person in a meaningful way and how hard it is to sustain that initial magic.
Yeah, it's quite grounded. What I love is how well it portrays that late-twenties mentality (which is where I am). It's that stage of life where you're really moving into adulthood and wondering what that really means.

I know what you mean about that late-twenties mentality where you're old enough to know better but you still end up making the same poor choices. Ted pretty much exemplifies that. I don't really have a favourite character ... yet.

It gets better and better too! There are still several irritating moments for me, especially with regard to Ted and his pointy upperlip. But it's the most easily identifiable sitcom, doused with such realism. Especially with the comedic punchlines. They're not outrageous and unrealistic yet cliched set-ups. Okay, fine some are. But a lot of the dialogue sound like something that would sprout from any set of real friends. I don't know if you're a fan of Friends or not, but HIMYM trumps Friends in my book. The relationship drama totally dragged in that show.

Oh, Friends doesn't even come close. I think the UK version of Coupling is closer, even though that could be a bit unreal.
