It had been a long time since Cassandra last slept without any dreams. The events of the maze had apparently worn her out more than she thought because for the first time, she found herself waking after the sun had risen, with no memory of her dreams at all. She allowed herself to luxuriate in bed for a little while, savoring the feelings before she finally dragged herself to her feet and dressed. She had made herself a chiton out of a spare bedsheet. The mere smell of fresh clothing was comforting ( ... )

Bret felt that the way Cassandra phrased that made him a little uneasy. Looking pointedly at Bonnie, he corrected, "Well, that'd be nice, but I'll probably pair up with a girl. Being so straight and all."

He paused, and then backed off slightly, realizing he was probably out of line. "Um-- assuming the girl hasn't been paired up with yet. With a boy. Or maybe another girl. If she likes girls." Another pause. "Have either of you paired up?"

He was failing at subtlety completely now.

Bonnie was confused. Why was Bret fighting so hard to prove that he liked girls? "Well--good for you!" she decided to say. Maybe that was best.

But Cassandra was right. People did tend to pair up during a time of crisis--everyone needed comfort of some kind. "It's probably already started to happen," she agreed. "Those things do." She didn't bother mentioning her date with Face--unlikely it was going to go anywhere.

Cassandra made a little bit of a face at Bret's question. The idea of pairing off with anyone was a bit...much. She was too busy being her own untrusting self. While everyone else believed whatever it was Cid and Simon were saying. Like Bonnie and Bret. She bit her tongue a moment. "Well, it seems a little silly to pair off, doesn't it?" she mused. "After all, if we get to Loophole, we'll all be returning to our respective worlds. It would be hard to maintain a relationship, wouldn't it?"

That felt like a fair and diplomatic answer.

One thing that Cassandra still couldn't quite follow was Bret's utter denial. But if he said he wanted to be with a girl, well, any girl would be lucky to have him, really.

Oh. That was a good point, Bret supposed.

Of course...That didn't mean he couldn't have a few nights that were less lonely than normal, right?

...No. Not really. Bret had never been that sort of guy, really. The few times he'd had those sorts of encounters, he'd always ended up regretting it. Not to mention the potential Australian factor that Jemaine had inadvertently brought to light.

"I guess that's true. Kind of makes making any friends a little sad, though." He glanced at the girls, wondering if he was on his way to being friends with them. Not that it sounded good in terms of how he was going to lose them.

"Oh, phooey," Bonnie replied, waving her hand. "That's no way to live your life--going around and expecting the worst to happen." Some people were just that type. Talk about going home and they'd say it would never happen. Talk about making friends and they'd bring up going home. Cassandra seemed like the type--well, Bonnie was the exact opposite. She preferred to see the best in everything. She'd just have to teach Cassandra to be less sullen, Bonnie decided.

"Of course we should make friends and go on dates and stuff. Why, I'm going on one later today!"

That particular comment almost made Cassandra laugh. She had been living her life that way for quite some time, although not entirely by choice. It was easy to expect the worst to happen when it always did happen, precisely as her visions said it would. But she felt no need to address that. With these two, at the very least, she had the benefit of being able to define herself however she wanted, rather than by the mythology. Give or take whatever memories Bonnie had of Rowan, of course.

She smiled slightly, raising her eyebrows at Bonnie. "Pairing off on us?" she asked playfully. "Someone we know?"

Bret was, in a word, disappointed. In more words he was disappointed that he hadn't gotten to know Bonnie sooner, because even if she was the sort to date lots of different guys, that usually only meant that there were more guys for her to like better. And Face kind of sounded like an Australian name anyway.

Man, he just had the worst luck.

Still, he couldn't exactly say anything other than what Cassandra had asked without seeming blatantly suspicious. And probably creepy. So, doing his best impression of nonchalance, he listened intently without seeming to.

Bonnie laughed with a roll of her eyes. "Oh, goodness! No, it's nothing serious. Just someone to have some fun with. We're not going to 'pair off' or anything." Bonnie wasn't in any rush to do that--especially not while she still, stupidly, had Damon on her mind.

"His name is Face, though," she added as an afterthought. Well, it sort of was. Templeton was a mouthful. "But it's just fun to have someone pay attention to you."

There was no point in getting into the Elena stuff. No point in saying that she'd spent most of her life getting ignored when a prettier friend was around--it would just sound like she was looking for sympathy. That's what people always thought when she talked about Elena.

As much as Cassandra resisted that sort of femininity, she had to admit, she couldn't argue with Bonnie. It was nice to have someone pay you attention, positive attention. She didn't understand the casual flings that were so common back in Rowan though. In her mind, if you kissed someone you meant it. Which is probably why she almost never kissed anyone at all. But that was her damage.

Instead of saying any of this, Cassandra wrinkled up her nose. "What kind of a name is Face?" A nickname, she hoped. If not, this unfortunate man had plenty of reasons to resent his parents.

Bret had to agree with Bonnie on that one. Half of why being a musician was so cool was all the people paying attention to you. On a regular day he was lucky if the bus driver noticed whether he paid his fare or not.

Okay, it wasn't that bad, but he was rather average when he wasn't performing. And as far as girls went, even when the attention was too much, it was still nice...on some level.

Trying to keep from getting forgotten about again, Bret ventured, "Is it short for Facetious?"

"Short for Templeton Peck, actually," Bonnie announced. That didn't make any sense. It wasn't short for it, she didn't think. Just a nickname. "Or, at least, that's his real name." Suddenly struck by a brilliant thought, Bonnie tapped her finger against her chin. That's what people did in movies when they had brilliant thoughts.

"Actually, now that I think about it, you know what would be great?" She went on before giving them a chance to offer their opinions. "A dating service! People are bored all the time on this ship. People could say what kind of person they're looking for and something about themselves and we could match them up!"
