Sam's the Man!

No, this isn't a Sluggy Freelance post--I mean Sam Ramey. Who apparently is finishing off his 25th season at the Met tonight. Who knew? Well, anybody who got here in time to read the program before the overture started, I guess... anyway, he got a nice speech at intermission, and a commemorative gift of an engraved score for Don Giovanni, in a ( Read more... )

Was this at a performance of Don Giovanni? But, don't they realize that if you don't like male chauvinist pigs, then the second act should be your favorite part?

You would think so, wouldn't you? Also, you would think that you had gone to the opera because you liked music, or something crazy like that. But hey, if nobody had left at intermission, I wouldn't have gotten a seat for the second act, which would have left me as a substantially less happy person than I ended up being, so I guess their loss is my gain. :-)

I had a feeling something along these lines was going to happen, but I was powerless to stop it.
Oh well.

Personally, I'd be a little offended if someone gave me an engraved sore as a present, no matter what it was wrapped in!

Whenever we drive past the hotel you stayed at in Palo Alto, incidentally, Mac asks hopefully, "We see (holmes_iv)?" And when I tell him you aren't there anymore, he says, "holmes_iv on plane?"

D'oh! Fixed that. :-) Silly iPhone typing quirks...
And awh, I'm touched. Though boy, if I were still at that hotel or still on the plane...

Yeah. For Mac, people who are not here seem to perpetually exist "on a plane." Thankfully, this is a case where Mac's version of reality is slightly off-kilter.

Now, that's a bit unfair. apintrix April 25 2009, 16:16:08 UTC
1) It's good for people who don't "know" opera to go to opera. We want this! It increases the audience, it exposes people to beautiful and good things, etc. We can't expect those people to instantly be knowledgeable about what they're going to see. Having scorn about newbies and their reactions is really not helpful.

2) He really is an absolute jerk. It's reasonable not to want to watch that. I certainly turn off TV shows when their politics are personally offensive to me, and this strikes me as not so different-- just a bit more of a financial hit.
