Abby listened as the phone rang, she knew it was late but if something ever happened to Sinead she knew she would want to be informed about it straight away.
The phone continued ringing, “Hello, you have reached the voice mail of Eva Pendergast, please leave your name and number and I will get back to you as soon as I can.”
Abby hung up the phone and decided to try and ring Eva again later that night or early in the morning. Walking back into the hallway she quietly opened the door to Sinead’s room and poked her head in.
The two girls where cuddled up in the middle of the bed, the blankets sitting around their waists. Abby walked into the room and pulled it up, covering them. She stayed and watched the girls sleeping for a few minutes, a small smile on her face, glad Sinead finally had a best friend.
Walking back into the lounge room Abby tried to ring Eva once more and again no answer. She didn’t leave a message, deciding to ring Eva in the morning, after she called in sick for work.
She made her way to the bathroom and got ready for bed. Walking into her room, Abby pulled down the covers, turned off the light and got into bed. Lying down, she couldn’t stop the thoughts from running through her head no matter how hard she tried. ‘I’ve always thought Caelan was a wonderful man, he seemed so loving and caring when I met him. I guess people aren’t who they seem to be. I need to ring Eva as soon as possible though, she has to be told. How could Caelan hurt his own child? I just don’t get how some people can do that, it makes me feel sick to my stomach.’
Abby’s eyes closed as she fell into a restless sleep as she worried about the little girl who was her daughter's best friend.
---
Aisling winced as the bright sunlight woke her slightly. She could feel the warmth of someone next to her. She opened her eyes and blinked a few times letting her vision focus. Sinead was sleeping next to her, cuddling into her side. Aisling moved slightly so the sun wasn’t hitting her eyes and cuddled into Sinead.
‘I don’t know why but it feels so nice cuddling with Sinead, like nothing can go wrong. I wish I could stay here forever. Sinead looks so peaceful especially asleep. She’s pretty,’ Aisling thought as she got comfortable.
Aisling couldn’t sleep; she just cuddled with Sinead and let her mind wander. ‘I hope Abby doesn’t tell anyone what Dad did. I don’t want Mum to leave me with him. I need to tell her but I don’t know how. Maybe Sinead will know how?’
“Sinead,” Aisling said, slightly shaking the other girl.
Aisling waited a few moments to see if she got a response.
“Sinead, wake up,” Aisling said, shaking her a little harder.
Sinead groaned and rolled onto her back, still asleep.
“Sinead wake up before I tickle you,” Aisling said, knowing that Sinead was ticklish.
Aisling looked to Sinead and saw that she was trying to hide a smile; she smirked slightly and sat up in bed. The brunette sat over Sinead, ready to tickle her, a mischievous smile now playing on her face.
“Sinead are you awake?” Aisling asked, watching Sinead try to hide a smile. “Looks like I’m going to have to tickle you awake then.”
Aisling started to tickle Sinead. It wasn’t long before Sinead gave up the pretence of sleep and started to laugh.
“Aisling!” Sinead shrieked, trying to squirm away.
Aisling stopped tickling her and sat up straight, smiling. “So are you awake now?” she asked.
“Yes, very awake now,” Sinead said with a slight giggle.
“Let’s go watch some television until your mum gets up,” Aisling said, dragging Sinead out of bed.
“Okay, okay, I’m so not a morning person,” Sinead said, rubbing her eyes.
“I know you’re not,” Aisling giggled.
The two girls got comfortable on the couch as Sinead turned the television on. They flicked through the channels finally deciding to watch Sailor Moon, on the channel with all the cartoons.
“I love Sailor Moon, my favourite sailor scouts are Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus,” Aisling said, watching the show.
“I like Sailor Pluto, but she doesn’t come in it until near the end.”
“I forgot about her, she’s cool.”
“I do like Serena’s family though, I’m happy I have no brother though,” Sinead giggled, as she watched Sailor Moon being chased by her brother.
“Serena has an awesome mum and dad. I wish my dad was like hers,” Aisling responded, her voice full of sadness.
“Aisling,” Sinead said, hugging her friend tightly. “How are you feeling this morning?”
“I’m okay, I feel better than yesterday; it’s kind of like something was lifted from my chest. You don’t think your mum will tell anyone, do you?” Aisling asked, slight panic evident in her voice.
Sinead pulled Aisling closer to her, “I really don’t know, I can ask her not to if you want.”
“That would be good,” Aisling said, pulling the blanket resting on the back of the couch over them.
They watched television for another twenty minutes in silence, the sound of a door opening caught both of their attention as they looked towards the hallway.
Abby walked into the lounge room, yawning, as she noticed the two girls on the couch.
“You two girls are up rather early,” she said, walking into the kitchen. “Have you two had breakfast yet?”
“Not yet Mum,” Sinead replied.
“How does scrambled eggs on toast sound?”
“It sounds yummy,” Sinead said, smiling at Aisling.
Abby made breakfast while the two brunettes set the table. Abby poured them all a glass of orange juice before setting down their breakfast meal. They said grace and started to eat. After their meal Abby cleaned the dishes as Aisling and Sinead got dressed for the day.
Abby sat on the lounge as she waited for the two girls to hurry up. She noticed Aisling walking back into the living room.
“Aisling, come here please sweetie,” Abby said, motioning for her to come.
Aisling made her way over to Abby and stood in front of her. “Yes,” she said, not sure what to say.
“Come here,” she said, pulling Aisling to her, hugging her. “How are you feeling this morning?”
“I feel okay, my arm hurts a little bit, but I’m good.”
“That’s good sweetie. Do you want to tell me more about what happened with your dad?”
“Nothing much more did. I only saw him kissing Jodie and that was it,” she replied, her voice soft.
“That doesn’t sound very nice to see.”
“It wasn’t. Jodie looks like a bulldog’s bum.”
“That’s not very nice to say, but if it’s true nothing can be done about it, can it?”
“Nope,” Aisling said, giggling slightly.
“Aisling, I do hope you know that I need to tell your mum about this,” Abby informed her in a more serious tone.
“No, you can’t,” Aisling said, jumping up in distress. “Dad said Mum would leave if I told anyone and I don’t want Mummy to go. I don’t want to be left with Dad,” she said, her eyes filling with tears.
“Oh, sweetie, come here,” Abby said, pulling her into another hug, trying to calm her down. “Your mum won’t leave you with your dad; I know that for a fact. She loves you and cares about you so much.”
Aisling nodded into her shoulder hoping it was true. She felt a hand on her back, knowing it was Sinead.
“Why is Aisling sad again?” Sinead asked.
“It’s nothing to worry about sweetie,” Abby told her daughter as she saw Sinead attempt to glare at her. “Come give Aisling a hug while I go make a phone call,” she told her, getting up.
Sinead took her spot on the couch and hugged her friend as Abby walked into the kitchen, got the phone and went into her room.
Abby pulled out her phone book once more and dialled Eva’s number. She placed the phone to her ear and started to pace back and forth.
“Hello.”
“Hi Eva, it’s Abby.”
“Hi Abby, hope all is well with you?”
“Everything is fine with me but I do need to tell you something really important though, you may want to sit down.”
“This doesn’t sound too great,” Eva replied.
“It’s not, it’s about Aisling.”
“Oh God, has anything happened to her? I thought Caelan would have rung me if anything happened.”
“That’s the thing. Yesterday Caelan dropped past my work and asked me if I could watch Aisling this weekend while he went out of town, he smelt of alcohol but I thought nothing of it at the time. He left a bag for her and then was gone. I picked the girls up from school and later that night after their showers I noticed a really bad bruise on Aisling’s arm.”
“A bruise? Do you know how she ended up with it?”
“This is where you need to sit down. I asked Aisling about it and she said that she saw him with a woman and when he noticed her, he dragged her to her room by her arm. He grabbed her so tightly that it’s left a massive purple hand shaped bruise. Aisling also told me that Caelan said if she told anyone you would leave her alone with him.”
“I’m going to kill that bastard. How dare he hurt my child and tell her such lies. I’ll be down within the next four hours. If Caelan comes by don’t let him pick up Aisling, feel free to castrate him though,” Eva said, hanging the phone up.
Abby looked at the phone, placing it down on the dresser. Rubbing her temples she walked back into the lounge room where the two girls were.
