The shopping centre was crowded with people of all ages pushing trolleys, ushering around school aged children and parents who were chasing after their small children, as a collective sound of voices chattering could be heard.
Sinead gripped onto her mother’s hand as she led her around the shops, trying to find the perfect present for Aisling. Aisling was turning 12 tomorrow and the tiny brunette wanted it to be the best birthday for her friend.
First stop on their shopping trip was to the bookstore. Sinead looked through all the shelves in the fiction and history sections. She flicked through some books about Ancient Egypt, the Mayan’s and one about Atlantis which had been placed there. After her mother started to nudge her to get a move on she chose to get the books on Ancient Egypt and Atlantis, knowing that Aisling would love them.
“Is there anything else you want to get Aisling for her birthday?” Ms. Mulcahy asked her daughter.
“Can we get some DVD’s too, Mum?” Sinead asked, looking up at the older woman.
“Of course, sweetheart,” she replied, taking her daughters hand in her own and leading her to the DVD section of the shopping centre.
They flicked through the shelves of DVD’s together as Ms. Mulcahy chose some out for herself while Sinead was having a harder time trying to find something.
“What movies do you have there, sweetie?” Ms. Mulcahy asked her daughter.
“I have Toy Story 2, Pokemon the Movie and The Mummy,” Sinead said, looking up her mum. “I can’t decide which one I want to get her, Mum.”
“It’s okay, sweetie, we’ll get the three of them,” she said, taking them from her daughter and adding them to her own small collection.
After they had made their purchases, they stopped at the food court for dinner before making their way back home so Sinead could wrap up the gifts, which she was excited to do.

Aisling awoke, bright and early on Saturday morning as she jumped out of bed and ran downstairs. She was greeted by her Mum and Dad singing Happy Birthday to her in the kitchen as she was lifted up into a bear hug by her father when they were finished the song.
“Happy birthday, pumpkin,” Mr. Pendergast said, placing his tiny daughter back on the floor. “I think you’ve gotten a little taller there, Ais,” he said, holding his hand slightly above her head.
“You think so, Dad? Sinead is getting taller too. She’s not as tiny anymore. She’s about five centimetres shorter than me now,” Aisling said, demonstrating Sinead’s height with her hand.
“When is your friend coming over today?”
“Sinead is coming over at 2:00pm and Mum is going to take us shopping for some junk food and movies so we can watch them during the sleepover tonight,” Aisling told her father, jumping up and down with excitement.
“Sounds good pumpkin; now how about you sit down at the table and have some breakfast which your mother has made,” Mr. Pendergast said to his daughter.
“I’m going to head out for a couple of minutes, Caelan. When I get back can you make sure you and Aisling are preparing the downstairs room for her sleepover tonight,” Mrs. Pendergast told her husband, winking at him.
“Sure thing, Eva,” Caelan responded, nodding his head.
Aisling ate her breakfast, unaware of the silent conversation her parents where having. She placed her empty plate in the sink and ran upstairs to get changed so she could help her dad set up.
“Aisling, hurry up kiddo, we’ve got to start getting everything set up,” she heard her father yell from downstairs.
Aisling ran down the stairs and joined her father outside the door to the basement which had been transformed into a fun area. They entered the room and went down the stairs and looked around at what needed to be done.
“What’s first Daddy?” Aisling asked him.
“Well we need to move the pool table to the far wall, empty the bins, pick the game consoles and remotes up off the floor, dust and then vacuum the carpet. After that we can set up the mini fridge and pull out couch so it turns into a double bed. Sound good kiddo?”
“Yep, let’s get started. Sinead will be here in five hours.”
“We have plenty of time Ais. How about you start to pick up the game consoles and I’ll empty the bins.”
“Ok Dad,” Aisling said, as she moved over to where the television was and started to tidy up in front of it.
The sound of the pool table being moved from below gave Eva the perfect opportunity to sneak inside and run up the stairs with Aisling’s presents, hiding them from the birthday girl until it was time for her to receive them. She made her way back outside and got the cake from the car, locking it as she entered the house once more, placing the cake on one of the high shelves in the kitchen away from little hands.
The door to the basement opened as both Caelan and Aisling turned to see who it was.
“It looks like you two are making good progress down here,” Eva said, looking at the almost clean room.
“We are, Mummy,” Aisling said, placing the last of the DVD’s and CD’s in their rightful spots.
“I’ll go grab the vacuum and clean the floor since it seems like the only thing left to do apart from the couch,” Eva said, heading back upstairs.
After the vacuuming and dusting had been finished, they set up the bed. Aisling ran upstairs and got the fitted sheet her mother asked for as well as a massive pile of pillows. She walked slowly towards the door barely able to see over or around the load in her arms.
“Aisling, sweetie, let me help you there,” Eva said, slightly worried as she went up the stairs to help her daughter.
It was 1:00pm by the time they had finished cleaning and setting everything up. They sat in the living room, on the comfy couch drinking cool beverages, Aisling was telling her parents of what she and Sinead were going to do during the sleepover and they listened attentively until Eva cut in, telling her to go shower so she will be ready by the time Sinead came over.
Aisling paced around the living room, she was wearing an aqua-green, just above the knee, summer dress with white thongs on her feet. Her long brown hair was neatly brushed, held back with a white headband. There was still seven minutes left until Sinead arrived as Aisling kept pacing the room, looking at the clock continuously.
“Aisling, sweetie, come here, you’re going to wear a hole in the carpet,” Eva told her only child.
Aisling approached her mum and was pulled into a big hug by the older woman, “You look really beautiful, my baby girl,” Eva said, watching as Aisling blushed slightly before giving her a kiss on the cheek.
Aisling looked up, a big smile spread across her face as she heard the doorbell ring. “Sinead is here, Mum,” she said, excited, as she ran over to the door.
Eva opened the door; a blonde haired woman about her own age was standing there with her brown haired daughter who had a little carry bag and present next to her.
“Sinead!” Aisling yelled, as she ran out the door and hugged her best friend, smiles on both their faces.
The two older women watched their daughters as they got to know one another. Sinead was dressed similarly to Aisling, but her dress light blue, as she dragged her friend over to her mother.
“Mum, this is Aisling,” Sinead said, holding onto her friends arm, a big smile still spread across her face.
The older light haired woman bent down to Aisling’s level, which wasn’t much different than Sinead’s. “Hello Aisling, my name is Abby. I hear it’s your birthday today, Happy Birthday, cutie,” she said, smiling warmly at the child.
“Thank you Abby,” Aisling responded, shyly.
“I’ll leave you two girl to have fun now,” Abby said, waving goodbye at the two girls who were already half way up the stairs.
Inside, Aisling was giving Sinead a tour of the house, showing her where everything was and where they would be sleeping and watching movies that night.
They walked in to the kitchen to where Eva was. She turned to them and held up her car keys. It was time to go shopping for junk food and movies.
The shopping centre was quiet for a Saturday afternoon as Sinead and Aisling dragged Eva to the candy section of the shops. The girl conversed over what candy to buy and ended up throwing six bags into the basket as they couldn’t decide. Next was the crisp isle, Aisling choose out three bags of Tayto’s, Sinead nodded her head, agreeing with what flavours she had chosen. In the drink isle two bottles of coca cola and lemonade were added. They paid for all their snacks at the register, forgetting about the movies.
Back home, the two girls played Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega, taking turns at the levels until they passed each one, they didn’t notice that it had gotten dark outside until Eva walked in and asked them what their favourite pizza topping was for dinner.
Pausing the game, Aisling turned to Sinead and as they looked at each other and smiled they said ‘Meatlovers’ and ‘Hawaiian’ in unison, giggling at one another at how alike they are.
After dinner, Caelan dimmed the lights as Eva walked over to the table, carrying a golden coloured birthday cake adorned with three small pyramids and a sphinx with 12 candles placed around it. She placed the cake in front of Aisling as they all sung ‘Happy Birthday’. The song finished and as Aisling blew out the candles and made a wish, she cut the cake as her father took some happy snaps of the event.
Aisling, Sinead, Eva and Caelan sat around the table eating the chocolate Egypt cake. The two girls had cake all over their faces and hands as Eva took a photo of them smiling at each other.
“Mum, can I open presents now?” Aisling asked; her plate empty of cake.
“Once you and Sinead get cleaned up and into your pyjamas you can,” Eva told her.
Both girls raced upstairs and cleaned up, taking turns having a quick shower and changed into their pyjamas. They returned to the living room where Eva and Caelan had set up the presents for Aisling. There were seven presents wrapped up, waiting to be opened.
“Open mine first, Aisling,” Sinead said, excited for her friend to open her present.
Aisling picked up the heavy present and started to unwrap it excitedly. Once the paper was off, a massive smile graced her face, both her dimples showing as she hugged Sinead tightly, squealing with joy.
“Thank you, Sinead,” Aisling said, starting to read the book on Atlantis.
“Ais, you have a lot more presents to open,” Caelan informed his daughter, laughing softly.
“Oh, I do!” Aisling said, jumping up and unwrapping the rest of her presents. She thanked her parents for them before she placed them in her bedroom. She grabbed the DVD’s and went down to the basement with Sinead, eager for her sleepover to start.
Aisling turned on the television and DVD player as Sinead un-wrapped Pokemon the Movie from its plastic sleeve. She turned the lights off as they sat on the rug, drinking lemonade and eating candy and Tayto’s. They both watched the movie, eyes glued to the screen as Ash, Brock and Misty saved the day once again.
“I really like Team Rocket, Jessie is so awesome,” Sinead said.
“I do too!” Aisling exclaimed, with a mischievous smile on her face.
Next movie they watched was Toy Story 2, but this time they lay on the bed as they were full from so much junk food. The movie was half way through as Sinead sat up and grabbed a pillow to lay on, accidently hitting Aisling with it.
“Sorry,” Sinead said, looking at her best friend as an evil smirk graced Aisling’s face.
Aisling grabbed a pillow and hit Sinead with it softly, laughing at the expression on Sinead’s face. Aisling hit her once more before Sinead hit her back, laughing with her as an all out pillow war started. The girls jumped up on the bed and wacked each other, both trying not to get hit as they hit one another.
Soon they both fell to their bottoms, giggling softly as they were becoming tired. It was close to 11:30pm and Toy Story 2 had finished playing. The placed The Mummy in the player and watched it, hugging each other tightly when the scary scenes came on.
Eva went to go check on the girls at midnight and as she entered the basement, she was met with the sight of the two small brunettes cuddled up next to each other, asleep in the middle of the bed as the movie played in the background.
