Sorry to hear about J's mom. I hope she's okay. I agree, a non-flowering plant would be better.

Oh Bern, that is terrible. I am certain J will pass on your wishes. He's on the ground there, so can't he get something for the both of you?

He was too distraught and barely got out of the hospital to eat and sleep. I headed over there the next day because she was getting worse and I couldn't bear that I wasn't there.

Thinking good thoughts for all of y'all. I think the potted plant idea is nice too. Or maybe you could send a little care package with things like some nice jammies, a good book, tea bags, soaps, crossword puzzle type books for her to pass the time, that sorta stuff. Or whatever she's into. Something to pamper her a bit in an unfamiliar/potentially uncomfortable environment.

Thanks for the good thoughts - it helped! Based off your suggestions I got a bunch of magazines which helped both of us pass the time!

Hugs Bern-
I hope she gets better..
you're right, with pneumonia, cut flowers in a vase could breed bacteria.
how about balloons? - I loved Martha's idea too. There are some pampering items at www.redenvelope.com
