Newly Sorted into Gryffindor, Brice was walking aimlessly through the corridors, his hands shoved deep into his jeans pockets. He was trying to make a mental map of the place, but had to give up after five minutes. Hogwarts was huge. A part of him hoped to find Mel, to make things less confusing

Mel's head jerks up, as she was actually beginning to understand a sentence in the Handbook. (Chapter three, actually.)

'Brice! Don't scare me like that!' she scolds, and then notices he's not in the Sorting room. 'Congrats! They let you in.'

She looks puzzled. 'Why would Lollie break up with you?'

...and then a blush. 'Right, well, yeah, I do fancy you but it's probably not a good thing. For one thing, you don't fancy me.'

She may be fishing for a certain answer here.

Brice looked rather uncomfortable. He remembered his last conversation with Lola perfectly ("Will you bloody go and date her already, Brice?") but was uncertain of how to actually tell Mel about this. Scaring her away would be, um, a bad thing. Her next statement surprised him too much that he forgot about the Lola issue for a second.

He blinked. "Whatever gave you that impression?"

'Cause...you're Brice. And you treat everyone the same, whether in nicknames or, or gestures...so, what, you do like me?'

She trails off. 'Anyway. Lola's...she'd hate u--me, if I even mentioned it...'

Even soulmates can get things wrong at times.

"I've always liked you. I mean, not like that all the time, but..." There was a slight blush in his cheeks.

He ran his fingers through his hair. "Ah... I'm not so sure she would, sweetheart. Really."

Things would be so much easier if Mel could just read thoughts.

That would be an invasion of privacy and she's not sure she has the technique right.

'Seriously?' There's a tinge of pink in her own. 'But...how do you know she wouldn't mind? 'Cause...you're Brice...but she's Lollie. And...I can't upset her.'
