Muggle Studies Class

Aug 25, 2006 00:45

Ford wanders around the classroom while students arrive and settle down. Once it seems like most of the class is there he stands front and center and begins class.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Muggle Studies! I am your Professor, Ford Prefect, and I’ll be leading you through the exciting and non-magical world of muggles. The lovely Miss Abby Sciuto has agreed to be my assistant. If at any point you are having problems, please find myself or Miss Scuito to assist you. Some of the muggle technology can be dangerous if used improperly and I don’t want anyone causing permanent damage to themselves or to the equipment. That said, let’s get started.

“The best way to learn is through experience. In this class you will be experiencing life as muggles do. Please put your wands away and refrain from using magic while in this classroom. It’s time to begin experiencing and exploring!

“For your first assignment, we will be having a party. As you can see, there are three stations set up in the room. Each station deals with an important aspect of a muggle celebration. In the back you’ll notice we have a complete muggle kitchen. In that area is the station dealing with food. The area to the right of that is set up to handle the ambiance, that is to say, music and decorations. Finally, on the other side of the classroom is the station for games and other entertainment.

“Pick whichever station you'd like to work at. There is a list of tasks and some basic directions in each area. Some tasks and stations are harder than others and some are easier. The real goal here is to introduce you to muggle technology and lifestyle. I know you all have different levels of experience with the muggle world, so I’m counting on you to help each other out. I’ll come around to see how the groups are doing throughout the class. And that’s it. Go for it.”

Station 1: Food
- Make tea and coffee
- Make popcorn
- Choose and prepare other food and drink for the party
- Advanced option: Bake a cake
Remember, no magic!

There is a full kitchen stocked with the ingredients to complete the tasks.

Station 2: Music and decorations
- Decorate the room
- Choose and play music
- Advanced option: Set up the stereo system
Remember, no magic!

A table is covered in decorating supplies like poster board, markers, scissors, crepe paper, tape, novelty paper decorations, and strings of Christmas lights. There are several music systems, including a record player, an eight-track player, and a boom box with cassette and cd player. Speakers and components for a more advanced system are still in their packaging. Several boxes of records, discs, and tapes sit under the table.

Station 3: Games
- Explore the games selection
- Pick out a few, be prepared to explain how they are played
- Advanced: Hook up and figure out video games
Remember, no magic!

This station has a selection of playing cards, puzzles, and board games. There is also a TV and a couple of video game systems waiting to be hooked up.
