Unpopping Death ((from Gaiman's Endless))

Jan 02, 2011 14:46

There was a distant sound of wings rustling as the popcorn room began to shift. A pale, pretty young woman appeared, dressed in a black tank top, jeans and wearing a simple silver ankh around her neck. She looked down to see that she was completely covered in butter. Dragging a finger down a pale arm she shook her head with a slightly amused, if ( Read more... )

Castiel hadn't been to the popcorn room before. He would not be there now, but an odd prickling sensation had just started up along his spine, and it was sufficiently unsettling that he'd felt the need to track down its source. Which turned out to be this unimposing slip of a girl who, well before he arrived in the hall outside and peered cautiously in, was broadcasting power on a fundamental (and unaccountably familiar) level that surpassed anything he'd ever encountered.

As for the room itself, Dean and others had mentioned the butter, but no one had said anything about gigantic popcorn kernels. This place just kept getting stranger and stranger.

"Hello," he ventured cautiously, assuming the girl must already be aware of his presence. With that kind of power at her command, he doubted that she missed much.

She could feel him coming halfway down the hall. Angels were like that, though. Not big on the subtle. When he finally walked in, she smiled warmly, recognizing him right away. Death guided everyone after their passing, but there were always some that stood out vividly in her memory. This one was certainly in the latter category. Both of them were, the angel and the mortal.

"Hi sweetie. It's good to see you again. Both of you." She gave a little wave. "Hi Jimmy."

All right, that he definitely hadn't expected ( ... )

Death gave him a sympathetic smile, “I know hon, you’ve all had a pretty hard run over the last few months. It hasn’t been easy on anybody. Especially you two.”

The poor angel and his vessel. She really did feel bad for them. They had died in battle twice, and she had been asked to escort them both back to the field each time. It was a rare occurance, and one she’d only done a handful of times. And she liked them. The angel was sweet, in a sort of naïve way, and the vessel was a lot stronger than he gave himself credit for.

She watched him put it all together and realization begin to dawn. “I was kinda hoping you’d remember, Castiel. We had a few nice little talks before I brought you back.”

Teru had been in the habit of checking the popcorn room regularly, in case anyone he knew or anyone in serious distress arrived. The woman standing there now...

...he didn't know her, did he? She didn't seem like anyone he would have been acquainted with, but there was something deeply, unquestionably familiar about her. Not for the first time, he found himself missing the shinigami eyes.

"Ah, excuse me." He bowed, awkwardly and for some reason a little deeper than you'd expect. "I'm sorry, but have we met?"

She turned, still in the process of trying to scrape some of the butter off her arms. Death gave him a gentle smile.

"You don't have to bow like that, really. And yes, we've met before, but you might not remember it. Most mortals don't, so it's okay."

Most mortals? "I - I don't, but I should. I know I should." He recognised her smile, too, and it was painful. No one had smiled at him that way since he'd been a small child - yes, technically that meant 'at Christmas', but it felt much further away.

"It's okay, really. Not everyone remembers meeting me. I'm glad that you at least remember a little."

She flicked some of the grease on the floor. "Um.. any idea why I've got this all over me?"

He recognized her.

Granted, there was a ton of chaos the night Mordhaus burned down, but he remembered her. She had stood on the other side of the stretcher when he told the medic to kill him. Yet, she had been gone when he revived.

He didn't say anything at first, just watched.

Death smiled at him. "Your boys have been keeping me pretty busy, you know. I'm glad you decided to hang around, they need someone to keep them reined in. At least a little."

Ofdensen's eyebrow raised. "And how, pray tell, have they been keeping you busy?" He was starting to get an idea.

She laughed, it was a light, pretty sound. "Their shows, of course. It's a lot of work to pick up all those poor concert goers who don't seem to make it. But they all say it was worth it, so I guess that's something."

Now, Wishbone hasn't seen Death. Unless dogs are just that damn special.

But he sees a friendly face, and he definitely smells butter.

So they meet.

BUTTER! Wishbone lapped a bit up. Hi!

"Aww, aren't you a cutie." She knelt down and scritched the little dog's ears.

"So what is with the butter?"

I like butter. Butter's tasty. I'm Wishbone! he said, licking Death's hand.

She smiled, "Hi Wishbone. I'm Death. And butter's tasty on things to eat, I've never been covered with it though. I guess I should count it as a new experience then, huh?"

Kuronue tilted his head at her.

She was indeed familiar, but different. Or at least not what he remembered. He'd died quite a long, long time ago, after all. Centuries if not decades.

Still, she was hot.

"Hi," he said, making to attempt to hide the fact that he was squinting at her like he was trying to remember who she was. Which was what he was doing, yes.

She gave him a little wave. "Hi. Yeah, I probably look a little different than the last time we met. Nothing personal, but I kinda like this look now."

"How've you been?" she asked with a bright smile.

Right. Death.

He'd forgotten how...happy she was.

"Uh, things have...got worse before they got better. But I'm doing okay."

...Was it a good thing to want to come on to Death or a bad thing? Eh, fuck it.

"And you how's...things, treating you?"

She smiled, trying to shake some of the grease out of her hair before giving up. There was a brief surge of warm power and a flash of light and the grease shimmered out of existence. "Oh that's better. Really, what's up with the butter?"

"I'm glad things are better for you now, hon. Me? I can't complain. Guess I'm here for some kind of vacation?"
