Application for Karasu from Yuu Yuu Hakusho

Feb 01, 2009 08:22

A man dressed in a long black coat and pants stood in front of the desk. A gray mask, much like a surgical mask, covered half of his face so only his violet eyes were visible. He swayed on his feet and pressed his palm against his forehead with a grunt. His eyes flicked back and forth erratically as he filed through recent and painful memories. A ( Read more... )

"Now hang on, chap. Usually if someone's on their knees, they're surrendering and it's bad form to kill someone then."

Karasu chuckled. "Well...that's not the kind of 'surrender' I meant."

"You would just kill someone?"

"Well I would," he answered, "but I was making an innuendo there." Karasu felt foolish having to explain that to the man. Obviously somebody doesn't pick up on implications.

Everything in this applicant's manner made A's nerves twist with disgust and alarm of an overly familiar sort, and he backed away quickly.

Karasu spotted the boy in his peripheral vision and turned his head to look at him. "Hello there," he hummed.

"No," A whispered. "No, no." The man bothered him, the tone of his voice bothered him, and he reached into his pocket where he still kept a knife, ever so small, ever so secret. He stroked the handle with his thumb without drawing it; just touching it was a small comfort. "I'm, I, I, I'm not here for you."

The demon's eyes flicked to the boys pocket for only a moment, long enough to register that there was something in it. "Oh?" he leaned forward but didn't move any closer. "Do you know me?" Karasu was sure they'd never met (he'd remember a face that sweet) but the boy seemed deeply disturbed by his presence.

Wishbone whimpered. Something about this guy screamed bad news, but Wishbone had to be brave.

Karasu noticed the little dog whimpering a few feet away from him. "Why hello," he sang to the animal. He always had some...affinity for canines. Karasu took a few strides towards Wishbone and crouched on the ground in front of him. "What are you doing here?" he asked rhetorically. To keep the dog from running he reached a hand out towards him, displaying his palm.

To his credit, he didn't bolt. Yet.

Looking at someone. Someone mean.

Karasu blinked in surprise when he heard the dog speak, or more like think, to him. "Hmm..." Karasu hummed, lowering his hand. "How am I 'mean'?" He asked. 'Cruel' was a better word, he thought, or at least one more often used in reference to himself.

As someone who had tried to drink to reach oblivion, Soichiro was rather confident in saying this:

"It doesn't work."

"I never said it did," Karasu retorted. He flicked his inky hair back behind his shoulder. "The only way to forget...is to end your life. You didn't try that too, did you?" the demon teased. Humans were transparent in their suffering.

There is no such thing as coincidence. Kurama knew it before, but now, feeling that strange, creeping sensation of familiar youki, that 'coincidence' was as cheap as dirt and yielded far less.

He made his way to the sorting room, not so much thinking as being magnetized, pausing only a moment outside the door to compose himself.

He was frightened as hell, but by all the gods he wasn't going to let it show. Steeling himself, he leaned against the doorway, hands in his pockets, watching Karasu drip his own brand of charm onto the quill.

"There is no more disappointing thing," he said after a moment, "than waking up one day and finding one's hard work undone."

Karasu looked up and locked eyes with a familiar and beautiful demon. He shivered for multiple reasons. Kurama was here too? Oh Karasu had never been one to believe in luck, but this was certainly a most fortunate turn of events.

"Kurama..." he purred slowly, tasting the name. "It's been...quite a while." There was really no way he could tell how long it'd been. After all, he'd spent the time dead. But it was at least long enough for Kurama to regain the courage necessary to greet him upon his arrival.

Karasu moved from behind the desk and strolled towards Kurama. "I must thank you Kurama," he began with exaggerated formality, "my death was lovely. Poetic, even. Having all the blood drained from my body by a carnivorous rose?" There was sarcasm and honesty in his voice, an unnerving mix. Karasu took two more steps then stopped a good arm's length away from the fox. "I never dreamed it would end that way," his voice dropped to a malicious whisper. "I'll have to thank you sometime."

"I would think I was owed an apology as opposed to thanks," Kurama purred in return, not moving from his spot. "You ruined my composition."

He glanced at the desk, a little smirk on his face. "And now you as well. Am I to expect Toguro again?" His gazed flicked back to Karasu's vace, eyes narrowing only slightly. "You daren't cause trouble here, Karasu. I won't allow it."

"Toguro has nothing to do with this," Karasu responded. His voice was cold and sharp, like a blade. "I have no connections to him now. But I'm hurt, Kurama," his voice slipped back into its usual velvet, "that you assume I'm here to cause trouble." He returned Kurama's smirk and started moving closer again. "Besides, I know that you enjoy my company"
