Application for Meriadoc Brandybuck, Lord of the Rings

May 09, 2008 17:47

The door of the Sorting Room opens, and what looks like a small, curly-headed child walks in, holding a pipe. Only, rather than a small child, the figure is instead rather a tall hobbit; and in taking in the proportions of the room he finds himself in, he looks perhaps understandably confused ( Read more... )

"Who have you babysitted?" Wolfram von Bielefeld asked. "Do you like children? I think it's important to read to your children, and to give them all the attention you can. You must trust them not to be spoiled. Also, you are not human, are you? I think there are too many here already, it's not fair."

"I'm a hobbit," Merry agrees. He assumes that Wolfram must have some amount of elven blood, to make that claim, and bows slightly. "Brandy Hall was home to many relations of the Brandybucks, and as a tween I often had to babysit. It was intended as a punishment, but I am rather fond of children." He peers up at Wolfram. "You have children of your own?"

Wolfram von Bielefeld, although unaware of anything like hobbits, was satisfied. He appreciated the stranger's achievement of not being taller than him, something that seemed to be rare in Wolfram's social circle, although the demon was not that small for his age of eighty-something.

The blond straightened even further, and spoke with pride. "I have a daughter with my fiancé, the Maou Shibuya Yuuri, named Greta, and she is a very good little girl. She has a fine understanding of literature, art, teatime, and mud pies. Furthermore, she is quite talented in pronouncing her other father's name. I've seen her stretch out the 'U' in Yuuri's name for six seconds." Wolfram narrowed his eyes. "She is a princess, not a monkey.

Merry was uncommonly tall for a hobbit, in fact; at four foot four, only two others in the history of the Shire were of a similar height.

"She sounds charming," Merry said. Coming from an aristocratic family had given him some experience in talking to doting parents. "How old is she?"

((Placeholder as I'm at work, but I wanted to pop her in here, since some of her canon draws on some of yours :D))

"Entil'zha veni," Delenn said with a proper Minbari bow. "It sounds as though you have taken part in one of the Great Stories, have you not?"

Merry nodded; he'd heard Sam refer to their adventures in such a way often enough.

"I can't say I expected it," he says, "and the consequences reached far closer to home than I had expected; but I played my part about as well as I was able, I think."

Delenn nodded. "My people have a saying about the Great Stories: The universe puts the right people in the right place at the right time." She grinned. "From my own experience, I can add that sometimes it gets them there in the very least likely of ways."

((Nemi does know LotR, and it would be cruel to her to have her miss this opportunity. =D She would never reveal to Merry that he's fictional, of course. She does actually believe they're all real, anyway. =) If you think she's revealing too much of his canon, please let me know and I'll re-tag.))

Nemi enjoyed reading. She enjoyed watching movies. Even more so, she enjoyed watching movies based on books that she loved, and Lord of the Rings was without a doubt one of her absolute favourites. In fact, she had tried to break through the screen in the theater during Two Towers at one point. Ah... Yeah. They'd had to close down that place for a few weeks thanks to that. Oops.

She stood for a moment and just stared. A real Hobbbit. Geez, she was already at Hogwarts, how much better could things beShe was going to be cool about this, too. No squealing. Definitely no fangirling. No pinching of the Hobbit cheeks. No ruffling of the Hobbit hair ( ... )

((Not a problem at all! :D))

Merry bowed slightly (completely oblivious to the efforts that Nemi's going to).

"Hullo," he said. "I don't think we've met before..."

"No, but I've heard about you," she babbled, stumbling over the words in her eagerness, and fought the urge to touch him. He was bowing and everything! Just... a little... on the hair... No. Bad Goth. Bad. No biscuit.

"My name's Nemi Montoya!" she beamed. "It's a real honour to meet you, I've wanted to for so long! How did you get here?" And was Gandalf on the way, too? Because that would be awesome.

"So if you don't kill your own kind, what do you do if one of them does something bad, like try to kill everyone else?" The question, spoken in a high curious voice, came from about seven feet off the ground.

Megan was pretty much the opposite of very tall (standing, she would have only been a little taller than Merry), but one of the great things about wings and flying was that she would nearly always have a great vantage point.

Merry peered upwards. He'd become used to craning his neck upwards to have conversations, but this is a bit much even for him.

"Kill another hobbit?" He sounds genuinely quite shocked at the idea. "I suppose such things must happen, somehow; I believe anyone who would do so would be driven from the Shire, like the ruffians my cousin and I are patrolling for at present."

Megan fluttered down to eye level, frowning and obviously troubled. "It's a good thing that you wouldn't kill them, really. Killing is awful. But what if you know they're going to kill more people? Do hobbits have jails? How do you make sure they don't escape and hurt people outside of your home? And what's a hobbit?"

"Are you a halfling?"

Jezz was on the tall side for a drow and still had less than a foot's height advantage - possibly less than a foot on a halfling, which to him did not seem altogether fair.

And Merry was unusually tall for a hobbit, thanks to the ent-draught: just shy of four and a half feet.

"Yes, although we call ourselves hobbits." He looked up at Jezz with some curiosity, having never seen a drow before. Try as he might, he couldn't think of a polite way to say 'what are you?', so he introduced himself instead. "Meriadoc Brandybuck, of Buckland."

He thought a moment. "Jezz Jaelre, of House Jaelre, in Toril. You're from a world that isn't entirely human, then." He'd become acquainted with the idea of other worlds, and there seemed to be a fair number of them like that, which mystified him - what was so special about humans?

He picked up somewhat on the curiosity, and took the opportunity to satisfy some of his own in the answering. "What other races do you have in your world? Elves and orcs and the like?"

And are they perhaps accordingly taller? he almost added, but that would be a bit too revealing (and he was not insecure, damn it).
