Well, Matt would be pleased, although Near realized he'd sort of been looking forward to the planned wake. "A whip? Honestly, Mello." He couldn't help smiling slightly. "I've been expecting you." Well, it was half true.
My head comes around quickly. I feel my teeth wanting to bare themselves in a snarl. "Near." I say simply. I wasn't going to rise to his games. Not this time. Not ever again. "You've grown," I managed to say conversationally.
A trap. He's trying to trap me, the bastard. "I remember what's happened." I can't leave it at that. He'll ask questions. I don't want him to ask questions. I don't want to probe deeper than I needed to. Not yet. There were still too many things unresolved, too much research I still needed to do and I don't want him finding out. "I remember what I need to remember," I add. The thing I can't remember, that I don't want to admit is that I know I died. I know that. But, why am I back and why am I missing time?
"... you got me killed, dickhead." Matt's head is tilted downwards, the grin that's spreading across his face hidden by the collar of his body-warmer. It's taking everything he has to act as coolly as he is, to stifle delighted, disbelieving laughter; he'd thought Mello was dead. And he's NOT.
A shock travels through my body. "Matt?" I whisper, unable to hold back my surprise. "Matt!" I keep myself from running to him. The only regret I had was that I sent him to his death. "If I had known..." I let the words trail off. Dwelling in the past, in the unknown would serve none of us any good. "Remind me to make it up to you," I offer. This I know is strange for me. It'll get his attention, let him know how much I regret that decision.
... whoa. Matt's eyes widen under his goggles; in the whole time they've been friends, he can't recall Mello saying something like that. "Jesus, man, forget it, I knew what I was doing." Kind of.
Oh, fuck this. With a few long strides he's at Mello, pulling him into a hug - a manly hug, of course. "I thought - you're alive, man, and you were right, we were so fucking close - that Amane chick, her fiance was Kira. Yagami's son. We were so close! And she's here. So's Near - you probably already knew - I punched him in the face." He's babbling, and laughing, and when he finally lets Mello go he's trembling faintly with suppressed excitement, like when you spend four hours battling an end-level boss. "Jesus," he says again, laughing.
Matt hugged me? I'm baffled, but...why? I normally avoid such casual contact with people. Bemused, I pat his back. "Good for you, punching that fool." I can't stop the laugh that starts in response to Matt's. "It...to see you alive." I stop. If I keep going, there's no telling what will come out of my mouth next. "I'm glad you're alive."

I reach up and touch my face. "Yagami," I say coldly. "I see you survived. Did you ever learn the truth or are you still blinded?" Do you know who's fault it is I'm here? I want to know, but I don't ask. If the old man is still delusional, why should I break him of it. It wasn't like he had any reason to believe me, anyways.

Mello telling Konata to go away had the adverse effect.
"And you're more in character than Near is!" But she DID put the camera away.
Hey you know what? Considering what she just saw, maybe....hey! These actually ARE the people from their respective manga/anime/videogames, and not just cosplayers!

Well, if this is really Mello, she had one thing she always wanted to say.
I look this girl up and down. She was one of them. A fantatic. I took a step, glaring at the girl. I knew if looks could kill, I could be accused of being Kira then. "In character? Lighten up?"
I stopped. I was not going to sink to this. I was better than this. I continues stalking forward, pushing my way past the girl. There had to be a better place to be.
