The kitchen is already occupied, by a strange, gear-headed creature rumbling loudly through drawers and muttering to itself. At the sound of someone coming in it whirls around, then relaxes. A heavy wood door crashes open and two girls fall into an armory. Marvelously drunk, wearing a miner's hat with the little light still on, Ada whistles.

Sophie is sitting cross-legged on the floor of the parlour playing with something that she bribed Benson into making for her a while ago. It looks like a mess of wire, but closer inspection reveals a dexterity game like the ones seen at carnival stalls. Benson is dragging a large clockwork something down the hall with great care. It has wheels, but they squeak and grate with every inch he moves. He alternates between pulling while facing forward and pulling while facing back so that he is effectually blind for about half of the trip ( Read more... ) -

In the spirit of the season (possibly the arbitrarily designated season, but the distinction isn't important), he's absentmindedly stirring the drink with a slowly dissolving candy cane.
The cabinets have acquired tinsel somehow. He's not sure he wants to know. -

The kitchen is filled with miniature fir trees, gold things, white things, the smell of peppermint, and advent calendars shaped like snow angels, behind the doors of which are Kinder chocolates. Sophie's room is neither obsessively neat nor dreadfully untidy; she prefers to think of it as an ocean of order with small, carefully contained islands of mess.
