He's the kind of person to make a decision like that on a whim. Which, on the one hand, is kind of cool, but on the other hand, kind of sucks if you're a friend of his.
I sympathise with the web-addiction. Three years in college without net-access in my home weaned me off that, although now that I have broadband in my dining room again I seem to be continuing from where I left off. ;)
Have a good time with the fruit picking and come back to europe someday.
