I personally thought Akira was a brilliantly executed film that for the most part was an interesting exploration of feelings of inadequacy and a desperate struggle to belong, and for the latter part of the film, was an interesting exploration of corruption and how abuse of power eventually leads to destruction.
There was even a bit of cheesy philosophy thrown in for good measure. As a kid who was constantly picked on I really felt for Tetsuo.
