You can have an iPod when I'm president of the United States.

Prizes that work as incentives:
- T-shirts (also works on people at Google)
- Pizza or other food (does not work on people at Google)
- Long distance phone cards may work for some people
- Many kinds of trinkets with a school logo can work
- Promise of a job interview for the people that are good
- Money
- Chocolate
- Recognition in some public place (like being part of a list of names on a plaque)

I'm out of ideas

Are there standards of cost and risk already in place? If not, then this may be a bit vague ( ... )

Don't worry -- the question is exploratory and therefore broad in scope. We're trying to develop an idea of what undergradute students are willing to compete over/in.

i have the feeling i may have misunderstood your questions, however..

i'm a lot more attracted to programs where you automatically get something small for taking part, as opposed to one where you have a long shot at something big, but can end up with nothing

academic incentives are always nice; being excused from homework / assignments... bonus marks, bonus days for assignments, re-taking quizzes
