Dark humor novels?

Apr 01, 2008 20:33

I have been looking for a few dark humor novels. I am interested in ones dealing with twisted (totally out there/unrealistic is fine with me) and/or morbid plot lines but told in an amusing manner. What can I say? It is the state of mind I'm in right now. ;) What do you recommend?

Most of Christopher Moore's stuff is really funny, and pretty dark. A lot of murder and demons and small quick witticisms.

Practical Demonkeeping, A Dirty Job, and Bloodsucking Fiends are all good... Actually, everything he writes is good. :)

i wrote my senior thesis on Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead as black comedy, so i recommend it! :)

Anything by Evelyn Waugh will fit that exactly.

Don't know how "dark" Waugh'd appear these days per se, but does perhaps demonstrate nonetheless why the French call it l'humour Anglaise ...

He is dark in the way he treats everything with his scathing wit, and does not pause to sympathize, even with death.

Well, the key word is "anymore." I suspect a lot of "dark" humor doesn't come off nearly so much so anymore (Waugh being someone I haven't read much of, but i have read relatively recently). Not that the books have lost their edge, just that the world has become that much edgier, is all ...

Journey to the End of Night or Death on the Installment Plan by Louis-Ferdinand Celine. I can't think of anything darker.
