The Shakespeare Code - Doctor Who Series Three (massive spoilers, obv.)

Apr 07, 2007 20:56

Well, it was all a bit stolen from Harry Potter, wasn't it?

I'm not sure what I thought of that.

This is incredibly long and pointless. Don't say I didn't warn you.

I definitely liked it better than last week's, and I think overall I really did enjoy watching it, but it had some massive problems.

Right, straight to it - Freema's acting. There were ( Read more... )

Oh my WORD, the opening was awful. What was that? Most dispassionate air to a lady love EVER.

It wouldn't matter if she was playing Martha as a bit of a silly, over-excited, over-gesturing, high-pitched woman - because then I'd get caught up in her excitement. But it's so obvious, from interviews and the Confidentials and such like, that there's no real character/actor distinction between excited Freema and Martha in general, and that bugs me

Yeah, I see that she's supposed to be more intellectual and the fans are squeeing over how smart she is and then...Freema is so *bouncy* and chipper and (eek!) lightweight. So far. And yes, the crones/hags? So cheesy.

ButI don't wanna whinge only. I love the idea of words shaping reality, although I will agree that they fudged on making it science. They just had the Doctor SAY it was science.

Though, with this episode, I could almost overlook all that in hindsight of how much I did enjoy watching it, which is something I wasn't even close to saying last week. So yay for improvements!

I love the bouncy and chipper, and I love the intellectual...but they don't go together. They've got a nice, infectious actress and a good, strong role, but they haven't put the right person in for the job, as far as I can see. Probably because RTD etc had more of a say in who was cast this time round, as they picked her up from AoG, rather than doing the normal casting process. I don't know if anyone else was even considered for the role - and Martha's intended character does ring closer to Freema's performance of Adeola, to me, than the ( ... )

Good point. She probably would fit better playing a more Rose-like character, to be honest.

You know what I found interesting? The Doctor was SO less...seductive, for want of a better word, this week. Last week, his lure was so played up in order to drag Martha into the story. He was deliberately tantalizing her with the possibilities because he wanted someone to come with. Now? He's back to a more normal aspect, completely oblivious to her as she gazes at him on the bed.

This show...I can complain about things that I don't like, but in the end, I am always entertained. And I'm always looking forward to Saturday night. YAY, Doctor Who!
