I've used mapquest a few times. Mapquest.ca (I think it's also mapquest.com). You can customize your route and look for businesses along the way including accommodations.

Road ahead is a free ap that may help. Haven't used it myself yet, but several friends recommended it.

Join AAA and get a free TripTik (http://travelinformation.aaa.com/internet-triptik.htm). AAA is relatively cheap and you'll be covered if you need a jump start, tow or if you run out of gas or lock yourself out of your car.

It's a great deal and the TripTiks and tour books are really useful.

Plus you get discounts at tourist traps and hotels.

I like to get out the tourbooks at night, match them up with the map, and figure out cool stuff to do the next day. I'll do it on the road, too -- although these days we also use Yelp.

http://eccentricamerica.com/ <- You can try this site. There was another site a friend used in the past, but looking at that page, much of it has been taken down to convert to a book.
