German Chocolate Cake?!

I have been requested by my husband & his work buddies to make a German Chocolate cake in celebration of a great achievement by a guy in their department. (apparently since hubby brings yummy cookies to work, I've been voted the one to be asked to make the cake) anyway, I've never made one before & am not above buying the boxed mix & going from ( Read more... )

Do not - I repeat - do not use a box cake mix to make German chocolate cake. It is nothing more than a chocolate cake with the yummy coconut frosting. I usually use the recipe in my Betty Crocker cookbook, but something like this will work. In my personal opinion, the frosting is the best part :-)

No judgment if you're down with cake mixes...I'm just a 'bake from scratch' kind of gal.

Usually I'd bake from scratch, but when I venture into a new field, I'm not ashamed to go buy a box.

I'm already making 3 dozen mint chip cookies for the occasion, so might as well make my mixer show itself off :-)

My father loves German chocolate cake, when my mom makes it for him, she splits it into four layers and uses two cans of frosting because he loves the frosting so much :)

She got the basic how-to from Amish/Mennonite neighbors (forget which exactly), then she "tweaked" it somehow. I just know it's delicious and people beg me to make it all the time :)

Mix in bowl:
1 stick of butter (softened)
1/4 cup canola oil (or Crisco oil)
2 cups water
2 tablespoons vanilla
2 tablespoons vinegar (any kind... I prefer apple cider vinegar)
2 cups sugar

In another bowl, sift together:
3 cups flour
2/3 cup cocoa
2 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt

Then combine contents of the two bowls together.

Grease a 13x9 pan with butter. Bake at 325 degrees for 40-45 minutes (if metal pan) or 35-40 minutes (if glass pan).

While the cake is baking...

Put in a sauce pan, over medium heat:
1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar (either kind ok, but I prefer light brown)
6 tablespoons milk
1 1/2 cups shredded coconut
1/2 - 1 cup chopped walnuts

Stir constantly until it boils, then pour over the cake (while cake is still hot.)

My grandma has been using the one on the side of the Baker's German Sweet Chocolate bar for decades. Everyone seems to love it.
