What is in a name?

Sep 05, 2008 18:00

Along with Sars, I'm uber excited about the transition too!

And the other thread got me curious... Just what DO the names of your charries mean? I know a lot of you posted already, but some didn't post about names and how they related to their charries! :D

Post anything! What the name means, how to pronounce it, if the name influenced your charrie or ( Read more... )

Lou (Louvika pronounced Loo-vick-ha): 'famed warrior' xDD

Nipher (Niff-er): Derived from Nipherdil, a rare but beautiful flower.

Hawkins: Falconry

Illiad: Comes from 'Ilion', meaning Troy (as in, the city)

Patrokles (Pet-ro-clees): 'glory of the father' (haha, because that's sooo Illiad)

Achilles (Ack-hill-ees): 'handsome warrior'

Laertes (Lay-ert-ees): 'father of Odysseus' (... prefer the literary connotation xD)

Sorrows: Erm, sort of obvious. Sadness.

Madira: intoxicating nectar.

Evette: Yew tree.

Bacchus: god of wines

Wylie: means like, well-watered meadow or something.

Donovan: Strong warrior.

(**note: all three of the Hawkins have the term 'warrior' in their name <3)

When I started thinking about Dai, I was on a huge Welsh! kick, so I started looking at baby names. Dai's birthname- Deirdre, I was just looking for something feminine and fluffy, that didn't suit Dai at all. It means "broken hearted" or "sorrowful," which I totally didn't care about. XD

I had a lot of license when giving Dai his name, because it is actually something that he got to pick for himself. So it was a little like "If I was an eleven year old boy, what would I name myself?" Dai's simple, easy to remember, and just ended up...really fitting him. Also? Dai is welsh for beloved, adored one y helo thar irony. XD

Kincadd- The front of the battle. Dai really is a warrior (contrary to what his performance in dueling club might show), and the rest of his family really is as well.

And, there we go!

Oh wow! I've always liked the name Deirdre, but you're right about Dai fitting him. It suits his personality and it's cute! (And yay irony!)

Dai the Warrior. WARRIOR DAI! It sounds like a new age fantasy novel, or something. xDD Hell, I'd read it.

Andrew Malcolm Frazer - I wanted a common name so I went with Andrew. Malcolm I got from a previous Prime Minister in oz, Malcolm Fraser, though I'd already decided on Frazer as Andy's surname but I can't remember why I chose it.

Claire Frey - Frey is a French surname and I just like the name Claire.

Aleesha Montgomery - Aleesha came about because I wanted something that provided a lot of nicknames (Al, Leesh, Leesha, etc) and Montgomery came about because I was watching the Simpsons at the time of creating her (it's Mr Burns' frst name).

Maxie Lloyd - I wanted her to have a nickname that could be a boy's name seeing as how she hangs around a lot of guys, so Maxie worked out so she could be called Max. Lloyd is just something random I came up with.

Sunny Charles - Charles is random, and Sunny is named after a girl I went to school with who had the coolest name ever - Sunni Day. plus I thought it was a nice contrast with her less than cheery disposition.

Coolies!!! 8D

I like how Leesh has many different nicknames, that's a cool idea! Especially cuz everyone around the school calls her by different things anyway, haha! Even my characters call her something different between the lot of them! (sometimes it's hard to remember who calls her Monty and who calls her Leesh, heehee)

Sunni Day?! That is so bomb! I wish my name was Sunni Day, I'd say my full name whenever I introduced myself, heehee! That is way cool! :D

Haha!! I like Rae's name origin. That's so awesome! And Zanders as a last name! I always thought that name was so funky cool!! :D

DUDE! I love having French names in class! Mine is so dorky and sounds nothing like my real name, lol... But Etienne is such a pretty name!! <33

Oooooooh, someone else?? I'm curious!!! Do you have the name yet? Would you be willing to share it if you do? :3

Me too! Sadly my name just translates into every language, so I never get a cool name. It's only my own, but I love it. It's so proper and pretty!! :D

Yep! Hahaha, her name is Julianna Benton, but she goes by Jules. I wanted something more 'proper' that I could change to a funky name and one of my best friends has a little cousin named Julianna who is adorable, so it fit! And Jules actually came from Chris! That was his nickname for her and it fit her MUCH better than Julie. And Benton...I actually got it from Law and Order (SVU). There's a character with the last name Benson, and I just switched the t and VIOLA! :D
