As to the program: totally so.

As to the friends: as far as my experience goes (and that is quite far) NO girl in this situation has EVER listened to any friend (or to herself) who told her this was a bad idea. EVER.
And by the way, I count myself in that crowd as well. I'm as moronic as any other girl that ever was in this regard. And while we're at it, I believe men are no less moronic.
We (usually) know we're dumb. But feelings, well, they're not a rational thing.

What she said.

But, as the friend in such a situation, I'd still say what I see. It wouldn't help, but I would.

I would stress the "say" as opposed to "lecture" or "attempt mental re-programming". I would also add - "once" or at least sporadically instead of on a regular basis while this situation lasts. It won't help anyway, and it's not what your friend needs. He knows already all you have to say, but his feelings are stronger than his logic. Choosing not to lecture does not equal to not doing anything. He/She needs your support and your empathy. Simply being there is by itself - doing quite a lot ( ... )

Not that it'll help, but from now on, my friendly advice will expand to include linking friends in such position to this post.
