Doctor Who Disappoints & The IT Crowd Pleases

Last week Russel T. Davies in an interview with Doctor Who Magazine said about the worst thing imaginable for the future of Doctor Who:
“It does get very dark, series three, as it progresses, and I think there’s a little element of fun missing. I love those final three episodes, but part of me misses a great big Dalek/Cyberman war - the fun of it! ( Read more... )

What the hell is broken in Rusty's head? "Look, just because everyone likes the direction that we've been going in lately, and has enjoyed the stuff that hasn't been groan-worthy, doesn't mean it's any GOOD." Seriously, wtf is wrong with him.

The first few episodes of EVERY season have been colorful--some of them decent, some of them awful. It's like he has this same thought processes every year, and then the rest of the staff talk him into doing something thats GOOD TV by the end of the season. Only he has to inject it with poor timing and the same recycled plots that he thinks define Doctor Who.

Grah. Want to stab him.

dude, the doctor has always been camp. all you whiny goth kids need to go lie down and stop having the vapours. the strength of DW is that it can grapple complex and dark themes in the framework of what is a show for kids and their parents to watch together. this is like being upset that die hard four, the explodening, was not an alegorical investigation into technological exploitation of society and instead was about that crazy bitch being smooshed by an suv in an elevator shaft.
if DW stayed hardcore angsty like last of the time lords all the time, or even angst!lite like, say, 42, it would get old fast. Tennant would get tired of playing it, and catherine tate would have *nothing* good to work with and be reduced to a ginger clown with some nice cleavage.
Although I agree with you, RTD fucks shit up on a regular basis, i heartily disagree that this particular inclination is the worst thing evar.

Not really. As one of the rarely lame enough losers who has watched the entirety of Doctor Who (including the hokey reconstructions), it hasn't always been camp. Some Doctors are more campy than others, and certainly some serials are a lot campier than others. But the darker serials tended to be far less campy and were hindered only by special effects and budget.

But regardless just because a show can be campy doesn't mean it always has to be like Davies seems to want it.

Totally, but the number of good dark episodes we've gotten is far outweighed by the silly, fun light, often simplistic, and illogical episodes. So writing them off altogether - like he has quite clearly stated from that quote is very stupid.

Tennant would get tired of playing it,Everything I've read indicates to me that Tennant has most enjoyed the darker episodes. Don't forget he's a serious ( ... )
