“It must be because we are lazy and incompetent,” Czech said, completely deadpan. “You keep telling me that, I can't imagine why you would leave me in charge of something important

Hungary had more reasons to be angry. At this point Prussia had taken more control than she imagined, listening little to her and Austria.
She expected Russia to be dangerous and Serbia his annoying pawn. It was Italy who shocked her, Italy who she practically raised and now turned against them despite their treaties...
She got only one message from him.
“Hungary, please don't be mad at me but my boss says you're not very friendly to us but I try my best whatever happens”. Something like that, she had thrown it away shortly after reading

Hungary tried to not worry about her pushy provinces as she faced Russia. He was angry but his armies were hopelessly unprepared. And yet she wasn't much better off

Passive-aggressive, gender confused Czech-Slovakia = win. I love them.
It was Italy who shocked her, Italy who she practically raised and now turned against them despite their treaties...
And she hasn't even seen the end of it yet.
Croatia on the other hand was perfectly proper, just like Austria and smiled confidently as if he was caught with other men's wives in compromising positions daily.
He probably does. I like him a lot.
“Talking politics,” Croatia said. “It can be very intense.”
I love the way you make absolutely innocent stuff sound dirty.
I also love your Hungary - she's badass and full of love and naive, in a way. I can't believe you're making me side with her in WWI, but she's very relatable here. And that final part with Austria... That's how I always imagined the Austria-Hungary relatioship to be honest, especially this final part.

Thanks :)
gender confused Czech-Slovakia They're not confused by their gender, it's everyone else who is ;) I kind of find it funny to think about all the gender confusion around Austria...
I like to think Hungary/Austria get happier, but right now they're looking at a divorce in a few years :(

I am really glad every time I see this series updated.
Hungary's pov is poignant - the way she tries to keep things together, without realizing (or admitting) everyone in the empire is heading in a different direction Also, Austria's answer to her question is just perfect. It's so him.
I love scheming Croatia and androgynous Czech and Slovakia.
“Do you think I'm like Russia?” The twins exchanged a glance, puzzled over the question. “No,” Czech said. “Absolutely not,” Slovakia agreed. “Well, perhaps right now. I heard he comes up with random dangerous questions too.”

General Winter's less famous but equally troubling cousin General Mud was on their side. It sounded more intimidating with the deadly cold of Winter but the chaos Mud could cause shouldn't be underestimated

Safe cheerful topics were bound to run out sooner rather than later, Serbia found himself starting to freak out again when they talked about what to do next. Regroup at Greece's islands, then join in with France

It wasn't the best thing ever to arrive to some Greek island completely in pieces, feeling more dead than alive. But fuck it, they were stronger than Austria and Hungary ever expected just to put up the resistance they did, for getting here at all, for planning to get back in game as soon as they could. After all of this they couldn't fail

It was an awkward dinner. Czech and Slovakia oozed disdain with their every movement and it was a surprise they even bothered to show up. Even usually calm Slovenia was pissed. Hungary couldn't blame him, the poor guy had been out fighting Italy at Isonzo more than once already and it didn't look like it was about to end yet. After Slovenia ended up defending Serbia in an argument with Austria he suddenly found himself sent out against Italy instead. Hungary almost felt bad for him

Looking over their allies Austria couldn't hide his discomfort. Hungary hoped she did better. Germany was happy to see them, Prussia not so much. He still looked as arrogant as ever, but not as spotless and not nearly as healthy as he had when all this started. Germany was pale as well, worrying himself sleepless over all the things Prussia assumed would solve themselves eventually
