Hungary had more reasons to be angry. At this point Prussia had taken more control than she imagined, listening little to her and Austria.
She expected Russia to be dangerous and Serbia his annoying pawn. It was Italy who shocked her, Italy who she practically raised and now turned against them despite their treaties...
She got only one message from him.
“Hungary, please don't be mad at me but my boss says you're not very friendly to us but I try my best whatever happens”.
Something like that, she had thrown it away shortly after reading.
“I wonder what they said to Italy to make him turn against us,” Hungary said. To Croatia, he was at least listening. She was sure he kept his opportunities open with Serbia but she hoped he wouldn't act on them. She had always been honest about Serbia's hunger for power and the brutality he went after it with. “I wonder what kind of lies they told him to make him so afraid of Germany.”
“Because Italy wants some pieces of us,” Croatia said. “That's what everyone wants. You are so cute sometimes Hungary. But if you feel family minded today, think about how I would make a much better family member than Italy. I don't constantly stab Hapsburg in the back.”
“Maybe you should,” Hungary said. “That's the only language they understand.”
“That's even cuter Hungary. I love when you notice me enough to give me advice. Why can't you be more helpful all the time?”
“Your attempts to mess with my marriage is even more transparent than usual today,” Hungary said. “Try a little harder, will you?”
Croatia backed, as always. He knew very well she was the stronger one, but this open resentment was new and it made her very uncomfortable.
“Fine, fine,” Croatia said. “Tell me about how you kicked both Serbia's and Montenegro's asses again instead. I know it didn't end up perfectly but I still like that part. ”
“You don't like Montenegro either? I don't get why he is that suicidal.”
“I don't like the way he stares at my lower regions.”
Hungary felt her cheeks heat. Croatia's expression confirmed his careless use of language wasn't as accidental as Austria's.
“Sorry, I couldn't help myself... But it's still true. And of course Montenegro's going to defend his spouse. Haven't you repeatably gone after Prussia to defend Austria's honor?”
“I'm Prussia in your analogy?”
“That's your biggest problem with it? Personally I'm a bit bothered over how Austria never quite manages to return the favor...”
“I'm more competent than that,” Hungary said. “And he did help me with Ottoman.”
“Because he and his bosses had other plans for you... Can you imagine him completely voluntarily take a beating for you? He seems more interested in making others beat you for him, like me and Russia, because Austria doesn't get his own hands dirty...”
“Enough,” Hungary hissed. “If you bring it up again I will hurt you. Trust me, I can.”
Croatia retreated from her anger until his back was against the wall, smiling but not with his eyes. Sometimes it was easy to forget he was Russia's cousin too.
“I know,” Croatia said. “But I can make things very complicated for you too. If you keep pissing everyone off Serbia and his big brother is going to be right there to pick up the spoils when everything breaks apart.”
“I won't let that happen,” Hungary said.
“You better not,” Croatia agreed, lending forward a little to almost whisper in her ear.
And in that perfectly innocent moment Austria finally found them after getting lost outside for the last two hours.
“What are you doing?”
Hungary blushed. She was still in a sweaty dirty uniform, right from the battlefield where some of Serbia's people still stirred up trouble. Croatia on the other hand was perfectly proper, just like Austria and smiled confidently as if he was caught with other men's wives in compromising positions daily.
“Talking politics,” Croatia said. “It can be very intense.”

Hungary tried to not worry about her pushy provinces as she faced Russia. He was angry but his armies were hopelessly unprepared. And yet she wasn't much better off.
“Things have been so complicated lately,” Russia said with a dramatic sigh. “But this... This is easy. You and your friends hurt my little brother and now I'm going to hurt you.”
“Try,” Hungary said with more bravery than she felt. There was something wrong with Russia, everyone knew that, even when she was stronger she felt a hint of fear facing him.
She thought they would chase him off as easily as Prussia had, but Russia held them back. Russia himself went after her directly, not hesitating a moment. To her growing horror she realized he was still stronger than her.
“Prussia and Germany are strong,” Russia said and grabbed her shoulder. The contempt was dripping of his voice. “But you and Austria are weak.”
Hungary kicked and Russia grunted when she hit a sensitive spot, but he didn't let go. He slammed her head into a nearby tree and for a moment she saw nothing but darkness.
“You are always cruel to my relatives,” Russia said and shook her a bit, trying to stir a reaction. “But you are afraid of me, aren't you?”
“Hey, don't hit girls!”
For a moment Hungary saw four of Prussia and even that was a welcome sight. Russia stopped shaking her.
“I can hurt you instead,” Russia said.
“Try to hurt the awesome me if you think you can,” Prussia taunted.
Russia threw her aside and Hungary yelped in pain, making Prussia's eyes narrow even further.
Russia was bigger than Prussia and he was always frightening, but he couldn't move like Prussia, who circled him and attacked with all the confidence that usually went into being an asshole.
“No, you obviously can't you spineless incompetent idiot,” Prussia said, not breathing nearly as hard as Russia.
Prussia was good, no one could deny it. After a short struggle Russia backed off, unwilling to go on. The mix of impotent fury and fear in his face made Hungary want to laugh as maliciously as Prussia did.
“Hungary, what's wrong with you?” Prussia asked after Russia had escaped. “You should do better, I'm kicking Russia's ass all over the place.”
He didn't sound as smug as usual but honestly worried. It was even worse.
“I-I don't know...”
And she couldn't say even if she wanted to tell him, she couldn't say when things had gotten out of hand like this, when she and Austria weren't even close enough to make their people organize a proper war together. They didn't even fight anymore, not the way they had in the past when they hated each other for a while and talked about it and made up and Austria said he loved her.
In another of those moment Prussia could have taken further of and yet didn't, he patted her hand helplessly.
Hungary came home looking like hell, feeling even worse. Austria nicely and politely helped her change, worried if she was hurt. She felt bad over what she had been thinking, of course Austria loved her, he only expressed things like that a bit quieter and more dignified than someone like Prussia...
“If Russia captured me, would you come and save me?” Hungary asked.
Austria looked surprised.
“Of course I would! I would hurry to gather up our allies, get my bosses to send armies and give it everything I have. You should not worry about that, I can try to prepare our bosses of how one of us might need it? It disturbed me too to see how easy Italy Veneziano got captured by Germany too, what if it had been one of us?”
Of course. It wasn't like Austria to jump at Russia and claw at him until he let go out of pure frustration. Austria's approach was smarter and more likely to succeed. But somehow that cold logic lacked the romance of impulsively and furiously jump to her defense.
I have Serbia being loudly angry but Croatia carries grunges very intensely but quietly instead... Russia and Serbia were kind of the cheerleaders of panslavism back then, which Austria-Hungary disapproved strongly of, considering a large part of their empire was slavic nations who started to think maybe they would be better off without them. And as far as I understand they saw Serbia pretty much as Russia's satellite and Serbia challenging them as Russia picking a fight by proxy...

Passive-aggressive, gender confused Czech-Slovakia = win. I love them.
It was Italy who shocked her, Italy who she practically raised and now turned against them despite their treaties...
And she hasn't even seen the end of it yet.
Croatia on the other hand was perfectly proper, just like Austria and smiled confidently as if he was caught with other men's wives in compromising positions daily.
He probably does. I like him a lot.
“Talking politics,” Croatia said. “It can be very intense.”
I love the way you make absolutely innocent stuff sound dirty.
I also love your Hungary - she's badass and full of love and naive, in a way. I can't believe you're making me side with her in WWI, but she's very relatable here. And that final part with Austria... That's how I always imagined the Austria-Hungary relatioship to be honest, especially this final part.

Thanks :)
gender confused Czech-Slovakia They're not confused by their gender, it's everyone else who is ;) I kind of find it funny to think about all the gender confusion around Austria...
I like to think Hungary/Austria get happier, but right now they're looking at a divorce in a few years :(

I am really glad every time I see this series updated.
Hungary's pov is poignant - the way she tries to keep things together, without realizing (or admitting) everyone in the empire is heading in a different direction Also, Austria's answer to her question is just perfect. It's so him.
I love scheming Croatia and androgynous Czech and Slovakia.
“Do you think I'm like Russia?” The twins exchanged a glance, puzzled over the question. “No,” Czech said. “Absolutely not,” Slovakia agreed. “Well, perhaps right now. I heard he comes up with random dangerous questions too.”
