Here’s the first chapter. I hope you like it, it took me forever to figure out and rewrite. I’m getting back into the swing of writing after, like, a month-long hiatus. The title is from the Cirque de Soleil song of the same name, because I’m incredibly bad at naming my own stories like that, though I do intend for it to have meaning at some point. Enjoy! ___

“But still…” Antonio wheedles, biting his lower lip a bit, and Francis looks away before Antonio can use those big, green eyes to his advantage

The only thing that gives him pause is Gilbert’s eyes on the back of his neck; they burn the fine hairs on his nape, setting him on edge and making him all too aware of the letter tucked away inside his breast. He thinks of his father’s handwriting, with words as elegant and crisp as the ink used to write them

This is so disturbing, the scene you've set. This is the guard's first time seeing what's been going on, right? Oh, Gods. I hope they unlock her (I'm guessing that's what all the keys are for) and offer her a coat or something before they start freaking out. That can come after.

*squeaks* Oh dear. Oh dear GODS.... My heart is rather broken right now. I demand the kings blood, NOW. *goes on mother bear rampage*
The... the way you described her at the end utterly broke my heart and destroyed my soul. Something about the WAY you described her was so VIVID. I am going to be seeing that in my mind for quite a while now, I think.
...I just want to go in there and hug her and never let go, eh?

So, yeah, I shared this with a friend, and after talking about how heart-rending your descriptions of Alice were... we, uh, started talking about what we'd like to see happen to her dad. An excert from the convo follows:

Th-thank you so much to everyone for their kind comments! I’m sorry that I haven’t had a chance to reply to everyone, but I’ll make every effort to do so in the future. In the meantime, here’s Chapter 2. I’m thinking updates will be every week on either Mon. - Wed., but don’t quote me.

Francis spots the telltale glisten in her eyes, the way their edges crinkle with the strain of keeping that glisten in. His own eyes don’t leave hers as he reaches down to take his sword, standing as he slides it back into the sheath. “I’ll be back,” he promises. “I don’t want you to be alone.” She does not answer, and he thinks he sees the telltale shift of teeth on her lip.
Francis turns away with a flourish. “Come with me,” he says to the soldiers, and wonders when the silence grew so loud - wasn’t it only moments ago that he’d heard fighting’s distant thunder rolling in his ears?
None of them speak, and they don’t even seem to breathe as they walk down the stairs behind Francis.
Even if they’d tried to talk, the glass-shard sobs that follow them down the stairs would overpower their voices. ___
Birdsong cleanses their ears, and they breathe out a collective sigh as Francis locks the door. The peace lingers only a moment more.

Lovino pales, his eyes widening. “I didn’t,” he says, “I swear to God I didn’t know. N-not even before -”
“It’s all right,” Francis says, “I believe you.” He raises his voice when he sees Gilbert opening his mouth from the corner of his eye. “How much gold should we pay for your cooperation and silence?”
Lovino scoffs. “You insult me,” he says, stalking past Francis. “I’ll help you, because otherwise my idiot brother will start lecturing me about Sol’s teachings and then he’d start crying and getting snot everywhere.”
“Aww, Lovino, you’re so noble!”
“Shut up!”
Francis sighs out a smile and turns back to the tower. “I need my father’s counsel,” he murmurs, his eyes not leaving Alice’s single source of light. “And I’m going to write and inform him we reached Oranbega safely. Antonio, Gilbert, please stay with Lovino for now.”
“What?” Gilbert says, his eyes widening. “No. You’re - you’re not seriously
