USUK human AU in the gilded age (1880s-90s... well, you can take this up to 1910 if you like) anonymous March 3 2010, 23:29:29 UTC
Alfred as a young, rich, new money american, traveling around Europe to party get some culture...

+

Arthur as semi-fallen aristocracy struggling to hold onto his estate and keep up appearances despite mounting debts...

= ???

Possibly you could have Alfred buying or renting Arthur's home. Or perhaps Arthur is hoping to marry into Alfred's family (feel free make up a sister or cousin for Alfred); the Kirkland fortunes would be buoyed by a generous american dowry, while the Jones family name would be distinguished by a connection to european aristocracy. Or they could meet some other way, it's your choice.

Anon prefers happy endings - you can stuff in as much angst as you like, as long as the end is happy.

Bonus for historical details.

author!anon apologizes for any discrepancies ahead of time in regards to the English nobility. And anything else that is, er, off."I've yet to comprehend the reason for this," Arthur Kirkland said, reclining on a cream divan. "You say he is an American. You say he is coming to Europe in a matter of days. What does that have to do with me ( ... )

"His name is Jones?" Arthur sardonically said. The princess of Wales would be holding a gala the day before the French invaded the English channel. A Russian Grand Duke and Duchess had been invited, and his mind thought of other potential guests. He had not seen Francis Bonnefoy since the end of that disastrous Marseilles rendezvous towards the end of the last season. The count's not-entirely-polite sigh brought Arthur back to London. "How distinctly American. And if he had a sister, her name would be Daisy, wouldn't it ( ... )

(OP) I nearly choked on my drink when I saw that someone filled this - and you're doing such a brilliant job anon! Eeee, snooty spendthrift Arthur is so sexy~! I love how you've written the dialogue. And you even tucked in a hint at FrUK (one of my other favorite ships)...! Ah, I owe you internets forever, author-anon.

Can't wait for more! And thank you for taking this on. 8D

This is adorable anon! Am I getting ahead of myself or is that mention of "Daisy" a ridiculously appropriate literary reference?

On a clear autumn day in Manhattan, Alfred F. Jones was standing at the dock where the anchored ship, the City of Essex, awaited him. His luggage had already been brought on board by a tugboat and the ship was merely waiting for his esteemed presence. The last round of farewell hugs and kisses had just begun ( ... )

(OP) Lol, Matthew's connections to Cuban gangs...! I love the contrast between the brothers. And I love that you made both Alfred and Arthur over-privileged brats spirited young men, instead of the poor-sad-little-rich-boy thing that's so overdone. I can't wait to see to what happens when they meet.

Btw, author-anon, have you posted links to your fill at the fill updates log before? Here's the link: http://hetalia-kink.livejournal.com/7233.html

I didn't see this fill linked there yet, and I think you should definitely link your updates there so more people will be be able to find this great fill! :)

Found this through the fill list. ;)

This is a splendid fic, anon! I second everything that has been said; the characterizations are perfect considering the boys' social status and wealth, and the time period. I like how you've taken the time to really introduce us to Arthur and Alfred (and Mattie and CUBAN GANGS! and their mother...) in this universe. I can't wait to see how this pans out! Oh, and don't forget to post any updates on the fill list, as I know there are plenty of anons who will be watching for this like hawks.

Thank you, hope you'll enjoy the future fills. :D

But question: if I post any updates on the fill list, would I create a thread out of my first post? or do I just make a new comment? inexperienced!anon is inexperienced. .__.

/different anon

You'd make a new comment for every update. This is so that people can easily check up on new updates across the meme by looking at the latest pages of comments on the fill list, instead of having to keep tabs on each fic's update thread.

I can't believe this is only your first fill! You're doing great, anon, I love your writing! :D

There were few thoughts in Arthur Kirkland's head as he raced past the drawing room, down the spiral staircase, and through the front halls. He thought, for a moment, that he was forgetting something. A lapel, his favorite hat, but they were all on him, and as he opened the door he had the strange idea that he was exiting one phase of his life and entering the next. It was a fleeting feeling and somehow unnerving. The faintest of drizzling sprinkled through the fields that started where his property ended and he stopped just before his hair was hit with rain. He went back inside and retrieved an umbrella. As he headed out the doorway, a car pulled up and he opened the door ( ... )

"But if anything," Alfred was saying, "I still believe that the company must expand. There won't be any other way for us to compete with the other conglomerates if we simply back down and allow the unions to continue their collective bargaining and strikes. Allow strikes, they say? It's a dumb idea is what it is ( ... )
