Only Because.... [1/2] anonymous February 24 2010, 14:25:20 UTC
Sorry if this isn't what you wanted, OP. I tried for fluff. Hope you like it. :)Britannia flinched every time Germania yelled. The Roman Empire yelled, too, and just as loud, but Germania's Latin was sharper and harsher. The yelling got louder and louder, and Britannia knew he shouldn't have been listening outside the tent, but his stupid feet refused to move. He tried to make himself as small as he could and did his best to ignore how much he trembled. Only babies got afraid of yelling grown-ups. That's what Gaul said, but Gaul was a stupid fool ( ... )

Eventually, Gaul and Germania headed over to a small clearing, and Germania shrugged off his pack and settled down on the forest floor, leaning his back against the trunk of a tree. Gaul chattered away like an idiot bird and reached for some of the hair which framed Germania's face. Britannia chewed his bottom lip as he saw the hint of a smile curl Germania's mouth at whatever Gaul was saying. Deftly, Gaul's small hands wove a lock of Germania's hair into a long plait, which he tied off with a small strip of brown leather.

Britannia's eyes teared up at the sight. He could never do that with Germania. His peoples weren't related to Germania's own, the way Gaul's was. His brothers, Caledonia, Hibernia, and Britannia Superior, shared different languages with him. It wasn't right or fair. He was blond like Germania, even if his eyes were green, unlike stupid Gaul's stupid blue eyes. He should have been able to make Germania smile, too ( ... )

His peoples weren't related to Germania's own, the way Gaul's was. His brothers, Caledonia, Hibernia, and Britannia Superior, shared different languages with him.

At the time of the Roman conquest of Britain, the area of England was Brythonic Celtic, like Wales. Ireland is and was Goidelic Celtic.

Scotland was inhabited by Picts; not much of Pictish has survived, so scientists are not 100% sure whether it was Brythonic Celtic or something else entirely. Scotland later became Goidelic Celtic, when the Picts were displaced by Celts migrating from Ireland.

Then lots of crazy shit happened in the 8th and 9th century and England became Anglo-Saxon i.e. Germanic.

The Gauls were Celts as well (the Franks were Germanic, but by the time they arrived in France, the Western Roman Empire had already collapsed).

Thanks for the lesson, Anon, but this!anon finds feedback that actually discusses the story other than provides a list of facts much more useful, since this isn't a term paper but a piece of fiction instead.

But since we're discussing linguistic 'geography,' the Gaulish language was also spoken in Switzerland, Luxembourg, eastern Belgium, and western part of Germany. Of course, given that Gaul was so close to Germania in terms of location, one can easily hypothesize that the languages had some 'blending' through the closeness of the peoples who spoke them.

I guess you didn't like the story, Anon, since you didn't bother to actually talk about it in your post.

I had no problem with the story itself, I'm sorry if I sounded that way.

I generally don't leave reviews (because I am lazy/suck at leaving good reviews), but I have a bad case of "someone is WRONG on the internet", so the only time I feel compelled enough to leave a comment is when I'm pointing out factual inaccuracies.

As an apology, I shall attempt to review the story.

*flails for words*

I'm not sure about Gaul's cattiness and Britannia's weepiness, but I liked Germania's characterization.

.....

See, that's why I lurk.

No worries, anon. Sorry if I came off harsh in my reply. It must really bug you, how much 'Hetalia' distorts history.

Thanks for giving me the info.

Take care.

Oh man everything becomes so sweet when chibi!England is included. I loved your take on Germania (considering I see so little of him.) and Gaul!France is such a cute little charmer.

Aww. That was cute. I like your depiction of Germania, as a hunter and a warrior.

That thing about France being naturally talented at swords was interesting... and I think it might have just become a part of my headcanon. I mean, there must be a reason why fencing terminology is in French. And at the same time England being the hard-working one who practices to become great sounds true to me too. (Plus specializes in long bows and naval battles later, I suppose...)

You write them as very believable children too, it sounds so natural.

I think that's what I love so much about Germania the character; he's a fantastic contrast to the Roman Empire, who I see as a professional soldier.

I really enjoy reading and writing the Ancient characters; there's so little canon about them, and 'Hetalia' isn't too tied to historical accuracy in the first place, that it's a great playground for the imagination.

I'm always worried when writing children. It's been so long since I was one. It's good to know I did well in that regard.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it.

Thank you for the fill!

I like your take on Germania + alluding to little England's complicated history. ( It was kinda brutal and should account for some personality disorders):(

And so Germania plants the seeds for Britannia/England having the drive, not just the desire, to beat the crap out of France for as long as they both shall exist. XDDD I wonder what could have made Germania so angry that he'd storm off like that? From your description, it sounded like he was throwing one heck of a fit over something before he left. Hmm. Ah well.

Also, YOUR BRTIANNIA IS ADORABLE. His inferiority complex, trying to hide his crying, and reflexive spats with/at Gaul just make me want to hug him.

All in all, I just wanted to say that I loved it, and it made me feel lots of warm fuzzies, and I want to see more ancient-times!Nation-interaction from you! Thank you for writing this. ^-^

Captcha says: simpler time. I guess you might say that captcha, but at the same time, not really.

Thanks for your feedback and for reading!

I really like the Ancients, so you definitely will. It'd be hilarious to see my take on the Roman Empire and Germania interacting with their modern kin.

ReCaptcha: aboard on. You want to inflict them on the modern nations, captcha? ;D
