So, I've seen requests about 9/11 and the London bombings...but none for the Madrid bombings, 2004.
Spain agreed to fight alongside America in Iraq. On the 11th of March, 2004, 191 people died and 1,800 were injured in the commuter rail after a coordinated terrorist attack in Madrid
I want a fic set at that time. Spain/whoever, comfort and solidarity and all that. I wanna feel the love, people!
I remember when this happened here, at home. It happened at the same time I usually take one of the lines that got hit to go to class...but I didn't because I was sick that day. This is...uh...a very personal prompt for me because of that reason. I guess I just want some acknowledgement of what happened...? ^^U

Sorry this is kind of late, Anon! I got buried under my other requests.
The day was sunny, birds tweeting as usual, tomatoes ripe on the shelves. Spain cheerfully made his way through the supermarket, Romano complaining away in his ear about none of these eggs would be good enough for pasta. But that was okay, because Romano didn't come over very often any more. Spain was about to happily point out that they could save themselves the trouble and buy packaged pasta, when the world shifted.
Something burned.
His head exploded with pain. He could hear screaming, so much screaming, of his people, and eventually he noticed he was screaming himself.
Romano's voice called from somewhere in all the noise and the pain, but he couldn't grasp it. There was too much chaos, and his heart stuttered and stopped in fits. It was dark, but that was because at some point he'd screwed up his eyes like it could dispel the blinding headache.

The hospital ward was blindingly white when Spain opened his eyes. Used to bright sunlight, it only took him a few seconds to adjust. He turned his head to find a nurse checking the observations at the end of his bed

[Fuck almost de-anon'd there]Arriving back at his villa seemed strange. The world had changed slightly. Just a little less colour. Or a little too much. Everything was unfamiliar, which was strange, since he'd lived in this one house for upwards of 100 years. It was different. Not in a good way

i love how it goes from happy to really dark to sad to regaining some of that happiness, little by little. The raw feelings you described were excellent, anon. The anger and pain, but most of all the confusion. And OP is delighted that your headcanon says capital=nation's heart. OP forgot to request that and thought it was too late. Can't believe my luck ^^
You also handled well the delicate politics involved in this. After he wakes up, it was mostly sweet. France's over-the-top sentimentality, and the FrUK snark, and god, Alfred, he broke my heart. Very nice that Spain still thinks of him as a 'boy' all the time...it seems fitting
The ending was so sweet ~~ !! Romano was very very cute, i loved this line the most
Unlocking his door, he was immediately assaulted by something small, angry and Italian.AWWW, Romano

Phew, so glad you liked it! And yeah, it's my head canon that capitals = hearts. Because that's where all the action is, really. It's hard to keep a Nation together if the capital's gone.
Sadly, I'm buried under everything in life ever right now. Maybe, after all my exams, I'll write an epilogue. But right now, it's just this.
Ah! I do still need to post on the fill page. I'll run off and do that.

People were running, and panicking, and hurting.
