The boy is back the next day, wide-eyed and quaking as ever, and again he sets a box of tissues and a bottle of ibuprofen down at the register, and again he requests a pack of cigarettes. And again Janis shakes his head. He is getting too old for this, for fighting with children over his wares.
“I cannot sell you those,” he says. “Not if you cannot provide identification.”
Who does the boy think he is fooling? Even if he had some form of identification to provide -for yesterday he said he had none to show-he does not look a day over fourteen. Fifteen, perhaps, though that would be a generous estimate.
“I still do not have identification,” the boy tells him, and so Janis points to the sign above the tobacco shelf.
“It is store policy. No, it is the law. I am sorry, but if you still wish to buy the tissues and medicine, I can help you.”
The boy’s face wrinkles up curiously, then, as he twists his hands into his coat.
“You have not read the newspapers yet, then?” he asks. He does not ask if Janis has seen the news on the television

I'm in love~ Haha, I always wanted to read something about the younger looking Nations trying to buy alcohol or cigarettes but having a really hard time with it. You filled a request I didn't even post~! Stop reading my mind anon!

Oh, poor Latvia, he really look younger xD I once read that in Latvia alcoholism remains an entrenched problem. It really makes you think about that poor boy...
