The Global Symphony ~? anonymous August 8 2009, 18:23:16 UTC
I was watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC4FAyg64OI today and started to think of Hetalia, which gave me the thought/idea .. Wouldn't the nations all be able to play at least one instrument fairly well? We know that Austria can, but since the nations live so long, they're bound to pick up something like music, right?
So, anon would love to see a fic involving Hetalia characters and them playing music. It doesn't have to be them playing a symphony or anything together- it can be as simple as little snippets of fics, showing them playing, and all that good stuff. Or it can be something completely different... As long as it involves them playing different instruments. C:

Bonus if Finland plays the flute ~

Global Symphony - Austria anonymous August 8 2009, 19:11:22 UTC
God of MusicAustria knows all the instruments in an orchestra like old friends, like family members in some great clan, their names and moods and history arrayed in some great tree. He has played flutes of bone and reed and wood and shining silver, from the tiny piccolos with their piping voices to the great instruments cast in gold (though he does not play this lovely silver lady too often). He has picked through the horns until they too became cast of silver and brass, their voices like laughing boys and the cries of horses. He has plucked the strings of all those harps, until they became the slender and elegant curves of the violin and the fiddle, the torsos and bellies of cellos, with voices young and old, deep and sweet. He has puzzled out the intricacies of percussion, mingling rhythms with bells and what peculiar sounds can be procured from wood and metal ( ... )

^_^ It's fun writing poetically minded Austria. He does love his music (demonstrated by his insistence on the orchestra in the War of Austrian Succession strips). The piano has also always struck me as Austria's favorite instrument (though I'm sure he has a certain affection for the violin).

Global Symphony - Prussia anonymous August 8 2009, 19:51:02 UTC
TributeThe military knows music, for music keeps the men going. In the stolid madness and discipline of the army, the mind finds rhythms to occupy it, in the thud of feet and horse hooves. A disturbing song can be found in the sounds of battle, of the screams of men and horses, starting with the hiss of steel clearing a scabbard like the hiss of a snake, like a frost edged wind ghosting in the night across snow ( ... )

This is lovely - the quiet nostalgia, and yet looking forward too.

The military knows music, for music keeps the men going.
I thought you meant military bands here, at first, and then I realized you didn't - and what you did choose, natural melodies, dark sounds, real sounds, is far more powerful.

Old Fritz would have marveled over the flute in front of him
I like the contrast here between the new and the old.

This is lovely - to pick something so relatively understated for someone who is so, well, stated.

Prussia's an interesting character to mull over in general. And his obvious love for his Old Fritz has to be some of the most heartwarming but heartbreaking stuff in the world.

To a certain extent I meant to imply military bands but the natural sounds got to me a lot more. ^^; And yes... Prussia is likely to be a character who's always looking back but at the same time, doing his best to move forward.

Well, the flute was Old Fritz's instrument of choice. Stands to reason that Gilbert would play it.

Thank you!

At first I too though you had meant the music of the military, of the organic naturalistic kind. Then as I read on, and I was just bating my breath, anticipating and eager to read on, like how Prussia is with the flute, though also careful with it.

The flute! FLUTE! It just makes me smile so much. That even with Prussia being a fighter from birth, violent and battle-oriented by nature, there's still something more calming and soothing like the notes of the flutes.

Well, the flute isn't always a calming and soothing instrument, considering its use in military bands (admittedly as a fife) as popularized by Revolutionary War images. I don't think the Prussia is strictly a "by the sword" character; Prussia was actually quite dedicated to the arts and sciences and thus had a certain refinement of its own (particularly in Frederick the Great's reign and also during his grandfather's reign). But yes, the flute would represent something gentler and softer for Prussia as the personification.

Thank you!

Beautiful and sweet, so wonderfully written! The feelings and passion Spain has in learning the instruments, and then playing for the Italy brothers and teaching them, seeing Romano picking it up, passing the stringed instrument to his 'children'.

Ah, anon do hope that you've more of these snippets. ^^

The guitar is really an interesting piece of legacy, considering its history and just how it is played in so many different cultures. Spain does have passion, I think; it's just for very particular things and he's not in-your-face about them. The Spaniards definitely had a great influence when it came to guitar music.

Oh, I do have more, I promise. ^_^

Eugh, it’s another fill for this. First time writing in a very long time, so quality’s probably a little bit lacking.“Why the hell’d we have to come all the way out here anyways? We should be on the beach durin’ the summer, not’n the mountains. If I wanted to see snow, I’d see it the rest of the year,” Denmark complained ( ... )
