Well, it's been a while since I posted publicly on something fan-related, and it figures it would be something shit-stirring to draw me out

Well, I'm at least glad that other people seem to think so. I felt kind of like I was on a different planet or something when I was the only one in her comments who was saying anything.
In a related note (I think), one of the profs where I work has assigned a 2 page essay to his students in which they have to write about their day on 9/11 from the time they woke up till when they heard. And they have to end it with a lesson they learned from it.
Of course, many of them being 11 at the time, they have no clue, and it made little impact on them (most of them also not being from NYC). And so they're making up these ridiculous Hallmark card sentiments about having learned to appreciate life after that day. The lesson of the assignment seems to be that thousands of people die, so the least you can take away from it is a paragraph of navel-gazing.
I wish the lesson people learned was something more along the lines of, "It's not all about you, fuckhead."
Yeah, seriously. That post pissed me off almost as much as the story did. And, of course, she's locked it now. Figures.
Thanks, babe. I saw your post, although I haven't felt up to getting into any sort of substantive discussion yet. But as always you have my admiration for asking the hard questions.
I'm trying to keep my mouth shut and learn, but I wanted you to know that I'm sorry you're upset, and that you get to be the person who bangs her head against the obliviousness of fandom this week.
Yeah. Of course, that lump on my forehead was actually already there, courtesy of some previous bouts with fandom. So probably after this I will learn to shut my mouth. Probably.
Thank you, though, for this and your other comments.
I had the story post thumbtacked so I saw your comment over there before she screened. THANK YOU for doing that. I mean, there really was so much wrong with that story but I could only deal with the one thing. (Or, you know, not deal with it.) But as always you see right to the heart of the problem.

All I can say is that I agree with you on this, completely. And I'm sorry, as someone else in fandom, that you had to have this experience here.

Seriously, though -- thank you.
