The check-up on the former secretary had proven out his innocence, or at least bore out his story enough that Dinah and Momoko now considered him a dead end. Dinah had tried calling the woman he'd dated, but the woman had been reluctant to talk on the phone. "Or lived nearby," Dinah noted. "I don't know, do you think he's still in El Paso? If I were him, I'd already be in Mexico by now." Then again, maybe the guy hadn't stolen enough to be living the life of a rich ex-pat yet.

The first place was SuZu Restaurant, a Mexican-Asian place that Dinah was tempted to order dinner once the night was over.

"Hmm. Well, if he's not here, he probably wouldn't be too far? I mean, sure he got a lot of money, but he does spend some, too." She nodded to the door they were approaching. "And not just for his business schemes. Besides, if he hasn't been caught why would he stop?"

"True." Dinah made a sour face, then stopped to look around, finding the hostess. "P.I. time," she whispered to Momoko, thinking that might be the easiest way to play this with people they didn't suspect of any collusion.

"Miss? Hi." Dinah showed her New Jersey P.I. (in-training) license, and smiled. "Can we have a couple minutes to ask a few questions?"

"Is... is there a problem? I can get my manager?"

"No, it's nothing serious; we just have a few questions. About someone who may have been in a few times in the past few weeks." Momoko stepped a bit closer and smiled at the hostess as well, reaching again for her notebook and wishing her old badge looked at all like an American one.
